this type are extremely boring. unless you mean it as a specific book series, then i dunno.

If an AI copy of a human counts as a non-human character, I highly recommend The Bobiverse books by Dennis E. Taylor. It's also one of the rare instances that I'll recommend the audiobook over the written, because the reader has a great voice and does a funny Admiral Ackbar impression. I don't usually read sci fi novels, but those ones are really nice.

The Chanur novels, by C. J. Cherryh.

The Abandoned or The Story of Jennie, by Paul Gallico. The story follows Peter, a lonely boy who is transformed into a cat after being hit by a truck, and is then taught the ways of the feline world by Jennie, a wise and kind stray cat.
