I feel like Fromsoft games should be disqualified since they aren't like souls games, they are souls games.
EDIT: makes the lists more interesting is why I'd do that I mean.

dark souls 1 is not even the first game in that series...
that would be demons souls, the original. and even that is a spiritual successor to the kings field series, fromsoftwares previous series.
Atlus stepped up, got the US publishing rights, and it sold like hotcakes. Bamco rushed in and bought the European rights after seeing Atlus's success.
Then when it came time for a sequel, Bamco wanted the rights to publish it everywhere, but the rights were completely spread out.
So instead they got FS to make a game that was LIKE Demon's SOULS, but still legally distinct.
So we ended up with Dark Souls, the first soulslike.
