What are tariffs?
In a few sentences, can you please explain what tariffs and why they're needed?

Who pays them?

Is Trump right to impose tariffs on Canada?

We the people pay them. And it goes into a bunch of rich people's hands who hate you and want you to die.
Tariffs = taxes on stuff coming from other countries.
They make imports pricier so local products seem like the better deal.

Importers technically pay them, but guess what — that cost gets passed to you.

Trump’s tariffs? Some say they “protect American jobs,” but in reality they just make stuff pricier — mostly because we don’t even make that stuff here. You can’t protect jobs that don’t exist.
A great way to stay in shape

Ask American farmers.
They're like sheriffs, except without the awesome mustache. And without the '70s era muscle car cruiser. And without the golden retriever-esque sidekick. And without the grey-area deep country interpretations of the law...

Okay, they have nothing on sheriffs. ♥♥♥♥ tariffs.

Tariffs are a tax paid on goods that are imported from another country paid by the importer.

Let's say you and I both own a company in both countries and my country sets up a tariff on your goods. For this example, we'll pick, idk, apples. The Government now puts a tariff on those items (usually to influence customers to buy local products), meaning that importing my apples gets more expensive, and I've got to raise my prices to pay those extra costs because otherwise I'd make losses as a business. Now, my apples are more expensive for me and therefore my customers because most companies adjust their prices to earn the money needed for this extra cost.

The thing is:
This is mostly used for items you also produce yourself, so that people rather buy and use products from local businesses rather than taking the cheeper products from overseas that may even have less quality. Using this on products you don't produce yourself or paring this up with laws and/or systems that destroy those businesses you have in your own company would be incredibly ideotic and only a complete moron or somebody who doesn't give a sh*t about their people and/or their economy would set up tariffs without a plan just to spite other people.

Good thing those people don't exist, eh?

Pretty much like taxes but on importation of products from other countries. For Trump he wants to use it to generate more American production and reduce reliance on countries like China. Since this mean that the US is finally, and rightfully, getting its ass kicked for once, I cannot support it in the context of America.I do, however, support an opposition to globalization.

For Americans one can explain it this way:

Tariffs are communism. They destroy free competition in favor of government regulations. Hence Trump is a communist, a left radical lunatic. He sadly needs to be deported to El Salvador.

They’re beautiful, really beautiful. People come up to me, they say, ‘Sir, we’ve never seen anything so beautiful.’ And I say, ‘You’re right.’ Nobody’s ever seen anything like it — the tariffs, they’re tremendous, truly tremendous. And we — I — we’re gonna make them even more beautiful. Can you believe it? Nobody can. I mean, I can, of course, because I understand beauty — I am beautiful, folks — just like the tariffs. Beautiful, strong, the best.

Trump just want you to pay more if you want to buy non-american things.

Tariffs are a tax.

They are a government surcharge on international trade usually described as a tax on foreign goods.

How they should be used is another discussion entirely.

Not exactly correct.

They, the vendors and manufacturers overseas, pays them in most cases. You may face an increased retail cost indirectly, but you would need to favour their foreign-produced goods over domestically produces ones most of the time.
