My lenovo legion 5 16irx9 died after 5 months.
Hey everyone,

I could really use some honest advice from people who’ve been using gaming laptops for a while.

I bought my first gaming laptop around 5 months ago, and sadly, it completely died while I was playing a game.

It froze, made a loud buzzing sound, showed a blue-screen error, and then never turned back on properly.

I tried everything:

• power resets,
• reseating RAM and SSD, etc.

but it turned out to be a hardware fault on the board. Soldering BGA problem on cpu. Basically, it’s gone. I have decided never to purchase Lenovo Legion laptops ever again after this incident.

I’m now planning to buy another one, but this time I really want something reliable (no lenovo)

not something that gives up in a few months. I’m fine with any brand, except for Lenovo, as long as it’s solidly built and spare parts (like battery and fans) are easy to find. It must be reliable from hardware perspective

I’m mainly looking for a laptop that can handle gaming smoothly (titles like RDR2, Valhalla, and future title GTA 6) but also won’t have hardware issues down the road. I play games on 1080p with medium to high graphics at 60fps.

Desktop is not an option for me!

So I’d love to hear from you guys:

1) Which gaming laptop have you personally used the longest without problems?

2) How’s it holding up in terms of performance and temps?

3) Any models you’d recommend (or avoid) based on real use? (I do not want lenovo. I despise them after how my legion laptop died so prematurely even after taking good care of it!)

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

I just want to make sure my next laptop lasts this time.

Just stop buying laptops for gaming.

Buy some parts, put it together. Buy some fans. Set fan speeds.

Done.
Moshie, I can help you but I am out of my mind atm. PC aged over 20 years is too old (on Windows).

First "gaming" laptop I had was from Alienware circa 2007. One of the hard drives that came in it went bad pretty quickly, and that was after Dell had bought the company, so warranty support was... unsatisfactory. I replaced that drive myself, and kept using the thing for over a decade, switching to Debian as the parts got more obsolete.

That was before companies started sealing the battery inside, so I was able to replace the battery after it's health was worn out, without having to break out torx screw heads and pry tools, and pealing off the rubber boots to get at the screws underneath.

Go to the kind folk at the other forum, here you shall see mocking, spite, and shame...

This is where you go for tech help and advice: https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/discussions/forum/11

Off-Topic is where people pleasure themselves... And you don't wanna get involved with us cause we are not ashamed to express.

This is only a warning...... you may stay if you would like too...

De nada. Seriously, seek help elsewhere with tech people not this disgrace called Off-Topic, but some people are enlightened, but most are trollish. Best interests, Love you, Milk Chan.

Hot tipoff: I actually do not hate people of off-topic but some people are poopyheads and dishonest. Salamander, for one is a true kickass and Bassturd, even though explicity vulgar and irregular, has some consistencies to regard.

If I were to "regulate" degenerates, these two would be on my high ranking of subordinates.

This is not to devalue the rest of Off-Topic, I seriously would love a hellpit in which you all would love, but I would also bake pumpkin spice cookies.

If this were a slam in the face, or insult, nothing is worse than my robot ♥♥♥♥♥ Tetsuko, who thinks this is still 1999, which we all know never existed.

then i cannot help you much.

i would recommend getting a laptop with the biggest fans you can put on it, or, remove the bottom from the laptop, and custom build a fan tray out of a poly construction shock absorbent case.

i ddid that once, and keeping it cool helped it last a long time for field work.

i'd go with asus or a custom laptop from a local computer shop, again with the biggest fans you can put on it. you need a huge amount of airflow to limit thermal stress.

edit: but this is like placing a bandaid over a big wound, keep your expectations low.

I use a ROG Strix, had no problems the first 3 years, and then the graphics card started to freeze the computer, causing a Blue Screen of Death occasionally. Now it is just getting slow when restarting the computer, but it did last over 5+ years, and is still running. I hear the quality on ASUS computers has been going down since then.

What processor and graphics, generation, and series is it? I might buy it then if I can find it.
Yeah or get an engineering degree to make better copper heat sinks.

Wow I bought a crappy gaming laptop pc and wonder why it only lasted 5 years.
Buying a basic laptop for work and a Steam Deck for gaming would come out much cheaper, if mobility is your concern.
