Only reptilians and greys do that.

When i say "usually", there are people that just spontaneously turn into crap while they are living, and they just don't seem to care.
For normal humans, not at all, obviously.
For metas and other superpowered people -- most of them have control over their ability, so accidental uses are usually limited to an initial phase. One notable exception that I can think of was Plastique (from the Flash) -- but she wasn't a shape-shifter. However, we don't know whether that might have changed eventually, as she was killed.
So for example most people here tend to speak their anger. While others actively try not go down that road at all. I wouldn't consider those not wanting to go down that road as masking.
Anyway shape shifting is something you can experience if you have empathy with the animal you're wishing to shift into. Which seems to happen naturally if you're in the right environment. At least for some.
Like the first time I shape shifted it was into a fish, I dove into a puddle and thought "fish" so it was forced.
The crocodile was natural. I was just a crocodile but I forced shifted from crocodile to shark for better teeth(you really had to be there lol). The crow was natural as was the lion, tiger, wolf, ox hybrid thing, mouse and bee(and whatever others I'm forgetting). Smoke and fire were more of a weird natural response to certain events as was turning my arms into serpents. I think I only forced the fish and shark, the rest just happened(the tree was a meld).
So I've shifted into many creatures. I kind of wonder now if that's a weird form of masking or if being human is just another mask. lol
No, this is not social masking. It simply means being empathetic and kind, where you try to avoid doing things that might hurt others' feelings. For example, you avoid making judgments and don't tell a clown that he's a clown, because it might offend clowns.
Social masking is when you meet someone who seems like the perfect partner. He showers you with gifts and compliments, but after years of being together, he stops caring, lets his hygiene go, start to smell and suddenly gets a belly.
