What's wrong with casual gaming?

I am a self proclaimed casual gamer. I don't play games a ridiculous amount anymore, I have other hobbies and commitments that take up my time. I'm not a fan of competitive games and I much prefer a decent single player game. Something like Enslaved, The Last Of Us or the MGS series. But for some reason "casual gaming" is scrutinised by the so-called "hardcore gamers", sometimes to a point that makes me believe these people seriously need to re-evaluate their world views.

So what's wrong with casual gaming and why do some feel there's no place for it or worse yet, like it's something to be ashamed of?

I don't really see the problem with casual games. If one wants to have fun playing, who are we to say which games one should play?

"Real" gamers don't think your E-peen is big enough. Doesn't matter that the average "Casual" game has more gameplay than a LOT of the oldschool games people tend to love.

Nothing.

And quite frankly you shouldn't give a damn what other people think. Just play how you want.

It's really sad that anybody cares, unless it somehow actually impacts their enjoyment of the game.

The only time I could think of this happening is if for example, a lot of casual players complain a game that was meant to be challenging is too hard, and the devs actually listen and lower the overall difficulty of the game.

♥♥♥♥ the bed, you guys replied quick. Well CS is exactly the kind of game I'm personally not interested in. I'm somewhat addicted to Steams review section and a lot of complaints about games (DOOM being the most recent example) are about how they're "casual as ♥♥♥♥" and I just don't get why this is such a bad thing. No one should judge, I just fear these people will affect the industry to a point where everything is ♥♥♥♥♥♥' Dark Souls.

Don't worry, they're honestly a loud minority. Dark Souls honestly appeals to such a niche group of gamers.

A good chunk, probably even the majority still, could still be considered "casual" gamers.

Games have honestly gotten much easier than they used to be, and I think that's where the disappointment comes from in those reviewers. More than likely they're probably old DOOM fans who are just looking through nostalgia - tinted glasses and can't accept change.

Personally I'm going to be giving the open beta a shot this weekend and I will probably have fun with it.
