Help me with "new" build and GPU options
Hi,

I'm currently building a PC for the kiddo. Nothing fancy, just a half capable machine on a budget.
If the used deals don't fall through (wallapop has nice deals but can be infuriating since sellers can cancel the deal at any time, even if accepted), here's what is happening:

Asus Prime B450M-A II
16GB 3200MHz
Ryzen 5 5500
1TB M.2 Kingspec
Thermalright AssassinX120 SE ARGB cooler (don't care for RGB but it's cheaper than the plain version... go figure)
PSU will be 550W 80+ Bronze (or better if needed for the GPU, more info below)
Maybe an m.2 heatsink later if temps bug me
I have a couple of fans laying around
Haven't chosen a case yet. Again, nothing fancy needed.

The main plan for now is to run linux. Might go for Bazzite since it should be easy for the kiddo to use. And before anyone suggest some other version of Linux that is more hands on, I am pretty capable but my kid has no inclination towards IT for now. Great and bright kid, just not IT person.

Now, the GPU...
The plan was to get a used 5700xt/6600, but they are a bit pricey IMO, not too easy to get and I haven't gotten to a good deal. I can get one at around 120 euros + (10 to 15) shipping. No warranty. I can also get them used at about 180 euros with warranty. But just today I stumbled across and ARC A580 used (amazon return) with warranty at 185 euros.
Prices are based in europe.

Mostly I'm concerned about drivers since AMD appears to have the best reputation for supporting linux, but Intel doesn't look so bad either. Besides, even though in theory the 5700xt has more "horsepower", the A580 isn't that far behind, is more recent, uses quite a bit less power and heats up significantly less, so overall might even be better (and less noisy, since that is one concern I keep reading about the 5700xt).

So, what do you guys think?

EDIT:
Found a A750 used, with warranty, for 155...

All I would say is grab a 850W just incase any 5800X or GPU bargains arise.

Don't have the PSU yet for that reason. So far, the 550W is enough. I'm just waiting for the MB, CPU and RAM "bundle" to ship out so I can snag a GPU. Already "lost" a 5700xt because the seller was too lazy to post it (but he did accept my purchase). Worst part in wallapop is that you actually pay and then have to wait for a refund (up to 10 days) if the deal falls through. Oh, and after all arrives, you have just 2 days to test it out. But I have a little cheat. I don't send things home. I send them to the depot and I have up to 10 days to pick it up, so I can let things sit until something else arrives. It's a weird system, I really don't like it but yeah, sometimes you get good deals, can't deny that.

Intel and Linux is fine but dual booting Windows and Linux can be bad if you put Linux on last.

I know that. Windows likes to run the show... Better to have different drives. For now I will see if the kid can use Linux solely. Might not be able to play Hogwarts Legacy... lol

Now I am curious, Linux distro, will it be an advanced version?

What nation you are from.. I cannot look for prices in your nation without...

You are correct that amd works better on linux.
It is not that nvidia will not work on linux though but expect them to perform upto 30% worse under linux. (Thus if a geforce card is 20% faster than an radeon card under windows than in linux that amd card often is intead the 5% faster one as amd performs basicly the same under both os.

Intel works good on linux (kernel 6.11+ ) but games themselves like it less and can cause more instability

in my nation the cheapest 2d hand amd in the performance and price range you look is a 6700xt for 125 euro ( no warranty)

Which is a step up from the 6600xt you look at.

6650xt can be had a bit cheaper around 110 euro..

6750xt sell 2d hand for 180 euro i see 3 sold last 3 days all very recent fresh posting with an vending offer but no actice listings plenty are offered but people buy the 6750xt more than the lower models..

Btw the intel A580 is not far behind a 6700xt.

It is AHEAD of a 5700xt

As for nvidia.

I see for example a 2d hand 2080ti for 200 euro.
On paper its a solid 20% faster than that 125 euro 6700xt And it has 11gb vram instead of 8gb

But under linux that 2080ti will perform like 3% slower than than 6700xt.

And nvidia cards better than a 2080ti cost even more..

So I think that 2d hand 6700xt is indeed your best pick at that budget.

No one should buy A580 ! trashy power hog , unstable mess
slower than RX 6600 but 200W , idle power 37W ! would need ReBar support and what not . Intel upscaler is ...lol

Probably Bazzite. Easy for the kid to use and not much to mess up. I might make it a trial run before I move the "main" computer to linux.
