\Device\Video3 Error occurred on GPUID: 100 need help:(
when ever i get a steam message, no matter what game i play, it crashes to desktop.

in the eventlog from windows i see this message:

The description for event ID "153" from the source "nvlddmkm" could not be found. Either the component that triggers this event is not installed on the local computer, or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event occurred on another computer, the display information should have been saved with the event.

The following information was saved with the event:

\Device\Video3
Error occurred on GPUID: 100

The message resource is present, but the message could not be found in the message table.

(Original in german:

Entweder ist die Komponente, die dieses Ereignis auslöst, nicht auf dem lokalen Computer installiert, oder die Installation ist beschädigt. Seems to me driver internal error. Remove clean re install. Gpu guid relevant to driver.

Yea nvidia driver component install error. You need to reinstall.

I just installed the GPU driver from Nvidia that got released yesterday (10.Sep.2025) and the problem still remains, It happened already before installing the new driver
DDU wipe everything GPU and Display related in safe mode then reboot and install NVIDIA 581.29

If still issues, DDU wipe again and install 580.88

Disconnect other displays if not needed?
Has nothing to do with extra Displays
So it's only due to Steam overlay, "nvlddmkm" this is the kernel mode driver, ID 153 is a TDR event which basically means the GPU is hanging.
Device\Video3 just means the GPU, GPUID 100 is an Nvidia error code relating to 3D graphics engine.

So when a Steam message pops up it switches to windowed/composited mode if on exclusive full screen, uses the GPU for the hardware accelerated elements that you see pop up, also involves other I/O for images and sounds.

So the fault can actually lay with Nvidia, Windows or Steam.

You can go in Steam settings and turn off hardware acceleration from what I remember, that may clear it, you could also change the TDR (timeout event) to allow more time for it all to catch back up but that's not really a great fix.

If installing the GPU driver again doesn't fix it try checking Windows for errors.
I am actually doing quite a few tests with another GPU about this very issue and will post my findings as they come about after retesting and zeroing in on the issue(s) at hand.

As of right now, it can relate to driver issues (very plausible) or this Nvidia Display crap that Win Update likes to update without negotiation/by-force.

I turned off hardware acceleration some month ago as I had the problem before, and it fixed it until today as it seems, I disabled the steam overlay as a temporary fix so far, all games I played since then run smoothly without any problems or interruptions, I can even receive messages via steam without problems, even get spammed from friends lol.

I tested it before with a friend and in farming simulator for example the game crashed immediately when I got just one message, in CoD MWIII the pop up was just shown as pixels or completely bugged out, like mismatched avatar with letters being all over the place but it only affected the pop up and not the game until, well the game crashed with an direct X error. (Farming simulator just crashed to desktop without any error)

I hope that makes any sense what I just wrote lol

My windows got updated yesterday with the newest update, same as my intel graphics driver and my Nvidia drivers today... So I honestly have no idea what the problem is ...

I actually use the windows game bar?? If it's called like that, pretty often (windows + g it is I believe) mixed with the Nvidia overlay and steam I have no other things active like discord or what else lol. Maybe it's caused by the Nvidia overlay or even the windows thing but honestly I didn't try out to disable them until now.
Guru 3d...

Download the proper driver from them. They been around a long time and had Nvidia drives on there site since the late 90s.

But why? You choose different versions if needed right on the NVIDIA site:

580.88
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/251255/

581.29
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/254263/

Now if you need DDU, TDR Manipulator or NVIDIA Inspector yes get off of GURU3D.com

If you are using Win11, whenever you download files deemed safe, before you run a file, right click the finished file and go to Properties and tick box for Unblock. Theh click OK. Then run the file. This will help avoid issues as well.

FYI since days the problem just disappeared, I didn't do any updates on anything, the problem just stopped, I can receive messages again while in game and steam overlay activated. I have no clue what changed lol ... Just weird ...
