m.2 e key is for wifi or pci-e cards designed for laptops
m.2 b key is for m.2 sata drives (not to be mixed up with m.sata)
m.2 m key is for nvme drives
pci-e lanes and rev depend on the cpu, board, slot type and drive
basically if it fits it will work
if the drive is 2 lanes @ pci-e 5.0, and slots has 4 lanes of pic-e 3.0, it will work with 2 lanes @ 3.0
there are some minor exceptions
e key devices may not work in all b+m slots
and some intel 5xx boards the top m.2 m key slot will not work with 10th gen cpus since they lack the pci-e lanes for it
