#KillWindows: Valve should just kill Windows support already
Is there any good reason why the Steam client needs to continue supporting this dead weight of an operating system? Every day, Microsoft continues to make Windows worse by implementing more and more antifeatures to the operating system, rather than doing what everyone wants and making Windows free and open source software (FOSS).

Microsoft could at the very least upcycle Windows 7 and make it FOSS so that the community can continue to maintain the operating system. Instead, Microsoft has continued to make Windows worse while not even allowing us to have their dead operating system.

We should tolerate this NO LONGER!

What good is Windows anyways? Nowadays, GNU/Linux has become just as competent of an operating system for gaming, often performing better in many games. Valve has been a powerful ally for GNU/Linux gaming, but they can take things a step further by deprecating Windows support entirely.

Doing such a thing would not only send a powerful message, but would force many corporations and gamers to install GNU/Linux instead of Windows on their devices. You will finally be able to walk into a big box store and buy a device preloaded with GNU/Linux instead of Windows.

Windows is no longer the best platform for gaming, and Valve has the chance to kill gaming on this rotten tumor of an operating system once and for all. Doing so will only make gaming better.

Whoa, hold up! I get that you’re frustrated with Windows, but let’s not pretend it’s all doom and gloom. Sure, Microsoft has made some questionable moves lately, but there are still millions of gamers out there who rely on Windows for their gaming experience. It’s not just some “dead weight” operating system; it’s still a huge player in the game.

And while Linux is definitely making strides in the gaming world, it’s not quite ready to take the crown just yet. Not every game runs perfectly on Linux, and many gamers aren’t ready to jump ship. Plus, let’s be real—if Valve just up and ditched Windows, it could create a massive backlash from the community. Not everyone is ready to embrace the Linux lifestyle, and that’s okay!

Instead of calling for a complete shutdown of Windows support, how about we push for more cross-platform compatibility? Let’s get more developers on board with supporting Linux while still keeping Windows in the mix. It’s all about choice, right? So let’s keep the conversation going and build a future where gamers can choose their OS without burning bridges.

Hahaha, not until there is a reliable alternative and Linux is not there yet.

The cult of Linux just gets more and more unhinged.
Cause 90% of gamers use WinOS. You see any big gamers or content creators on YouTube or Twitch using Linux as a daily driver... LOL NO

It's not about you or what you like, it's a business and that's about money. Simple as that.
What if they just totally stopped Linux support and forced Linux users to install Windows?

valve ending windows support would kill 90% of their user base

good idea there

PewDiePie, SomeOrdinaryGamers
If anything, Valve is more likely to release SteamOS and start pushing it instead, like giving discounts and stuff for using it.

But even then they are unlikely to kill windows. Too many people use it.

ms is doing a good enough job to push away windows users on their own
they dont need more help from valve

steam os is junk, just use another linux distro and install steam, then it can be used for more than just a gaming console os

current steamos is for the deck, they only need to release one set of drivers for the specific hardware
you can install it on other pcs but ymmv

Only about 20% of the games on steam are compatible with steamOS/Linux. 95% of steam users are running windows...
So yeah... let's all abandon windows and let those 95% of people be unable to play games. I'm sure steam can keep running just fine with 5% sales, or maybe just about 1%, considering that 4 in 5 games would not work on steamOS/Linux... Smart!
Not to mention that the numbers might be even less because of drivers and other software issues.

You should actually do some thinking before speaking your piece.

Windows is not and has never been the best platform for gaming. But you know what windows is good for? Doing a lot of different things. I have an xbox. Actually very good for games IMO, especially considering the price. Surfing the interwebs on it is ridiculously bad. Using word, excel and others is, at best, challenging. Getting a keyboard or mouse can be a costly event. Even the youtube app is poor as hell. And don't even try to look for many different software options or mod games.
I have a smartphone. Youtube is nice, word, excel and others are OK (but tiny screen and no keyboard is terrible) and the browser is decent enough. Ridiculously bad to "work". Can't run half decent 3D game. Keyboards and mice work decent enough if you are lucky. Connecting it to a bigger screen might not work or have issues.
I've had several distros of Linux. Overall they have been pretty decent to good. Smoother than windows even... but no MS apps that I need for work and my kids needs for school. There are alternatives (and I've used some) but they aren't close to word or excel. We can debate if we should or not (I think we should) use alternatives but most don't quite scratch the same itch.
But overall I can do pretty much everything on Linux the same as I do in windows... but pretty much is not all. I have to be lucky that all the hardware works and the drivers are up to date. I have to be lucky that all the software I need works too. The last Linux system I had, on a "media centre", worked quite well for my needs... except the software for my cloud service. The service does provide a Linux version but it was giving me too much trouble. And I needed it to run smoothly. Also, in order to properly run Linux I had to get another HDD (I had a spare around the house) because of driver issues.
Linux is not quite there yet. Unfortunately it's been "not quite there yet" for 30 years. I used it in the 90s and it was to change the world of computing and education... I'm still waiting.

What has been a better platform overall compared to windows as there is nothing I can think of.

I honestly think that for the "average" gamer xbox and playstation are better for gaming (not considering the number of available titles that is far greater for windows). But if you are a little bit more "advanced", just get a PC. I tried using mods on xbox. They exist but it's ridiculous. On PC, firstly you can mod a lot of games directly from steam. Second, even without steam, you have many options to use and a lot of free software you can use (like the nexus manager that is amazing).
