The cult of Linux just gets more and more unhinged.
It's not about you or what you like, it's a business and that's about money. Simple as that.
good idea there
But even then they are unlikely to kill windows. Too many people use it.
they dont need more help from valve
steam os is junk, just use another linux distro and install steam, then it can be used for more than just a gaming console os
current steamos is for the deck, they only need to release one set of drivers for the specific hardware
you can install it on other pcs but ymmv
So yeah... let's all abandon windows and let those 95% of people be unable to play games. I'm sure steam can keep running just fine with 5% sales, or maybe just about 1%, considering that 4 in 5 games would not work on steamOS/Linux... Smart!
Not to mention that the numbers might be even less because of drivers and other software issues.
You should actually do some thinking before speaking your piece.
Windows is not and has never been the best platform for gaming. But you know what windows is good for? Doing a lot of different things. I have an xbox. Actually very good for games IMO, especially considering the price. Surfing the interwebs on it is ridiculously bad. Using word, excel and others is, at best, challenging. Getting a keyboard or mouse can be a costly event. Even the youtube app is poor as hell. And don't even try to look for many different software options or mod games.
I have a smartphone. Youtube is nice, word, excel and others are OK (but tiny screen and no keyboard is terrible) and the browser is decent enough. Ridiculously bad to "work". Can't run half decent 3D game. Keyboards and mice work decent enough if you are lucky. Connecting it to a bigger screen might not work or have issues.
I've had several distros of Linux. Overall they have been pretty decent to good. Smoother than windows even... but no MS apps that I need for work and my kids needs for school. There are alternatives (and I've used some) but they aren't close to word or excel. We can debate if we should or not (I think we should) use alternatives but most don't quite scratch the same itch.
But overall I can do pretty much everything on Linux the same as I do in windows... but pretty much is not all. I have to be lucky that all the hardware works and the drivers are up to date. I have to be lucky that all the software I need works too. The last Linux system I had, on a "media centre", worked quite well for my needs... except the software for my cloud service. The service does provide a Linux version but it was giving me too much trouble. And I needed it to run smoothly. Also, in order to properly run Linux I had to get another HDD (I had a spare around the house) because of driver issues.
Linux is not quite there yet. Unfortunately it's been "not quite there yet" for 30 years. I used it in the 90s and it was to change the world of computing and education... I'm still waiting.
I honestly think that for the "average" gamer xbox and playstation are better for gaming (not considering the number of available titles that is far greater for windows). But if you are a little bit more "advanced", just get a PC. I tried using mods on xbox. They exist but it's ridiculous. On PC, firstly you can mod a lot of games directly from steam. Second, even without steam, you have many options to use and a lot of free software you can use (like the nexus manager that is amazing).
