Steam video game console
Are Valve working on a video game console?
Gamers Nexus think they might be: https://youtu.be/jNfmz0BowxM?si=4zrCBKDaWEWu8imG

Those specs seem really low though, hilariously bad.

It's super low and apparently it's running Windows 11 what sadly makes sense as AMD GPU drivers have no HDMI 2.1 support on Linux.

What’s the point of a Steam console that doesn’t run SteamOS?
I would drop $1000 for a 4K capable console that allowed me to play all modern games at high settings, but I have no interest in playing at low resolutions at low settings and dealing with Windows crap.

If they aim at $199 or similar then it would make sense.
But they can't make SteamOS consoles on AMD hardware if it has no HDMI 2.1 support and you can't use gaming TVs.

Valve can potentially push M$ to optimise Windows for console+TV gaming or push AMD to release proper Linux drivers and control panel (aka adrenalin app). Windows 11 is the only solution right now.

its stronger than the steam deck
so its very capable, but not nearly as strong as a decent gaming pc
might be another handheld, or something, who knows what its real use is
or maybe its just a sample thing they got from amd

Because SteamOS has too many problems and doesn’t run some things. The point of a console is it runs everything, not that it runs some things. They literally pulled Cyberpunk 2077 from the PSN store because it didn’t run properly, they can’t have a console doing that.

Win11 just works, Microsoft are going to release a more slimmed down variant with the Xbox Ally (X) as well.

Google A.I tells me that the GPU is stronger than the Xbox Series X. Of course, that console is 5 years old…

I've done some research and any test done through proton on Linux is shown as Windows.
So it's not possible to tell if it's Linux or Windows at this point.

I also don't think Valve would not choose SteamOS. They clearly want to avoid Windows and potential future problems of everythig going via Microsoft Store. Or games working better via Xbox app.

I think it’s more likely that the leak is some kind of test bed, not that the final box with ship with Windows. Valve have invested too much and done so incredibly well with SteamOS that it would be insane to abandon it in favour of dysfunctional Windows.

Could also be 2 different SKUs, one with windows one with SteamOS
Depends on the price. It‘s probably going to use 8540u CPU - 2C+4c zen4 cores with iGPU disabled - and 7600. If they sell it for 400 then that would be a win for PC gaming. There are a ton of people across the world that are interested in PC gaming but don‘t want to pay the obscene prices for prebuilt or are nervous to build one themselves.

I hope it‘s a major success and there will be future iterations with something like the AI max +.

If somebody is interested in something similar to Steam OS I reccomend trying Bazzite.

I think it’s the easiest and most polished gaming+desktop Linux distro right now and I personally recommend it over Linux Mint what was my recommendation until recently.

If someone is scared of deleting Windows by mistake, then I recommend getting some cheap SATA SSD.

I’m personally getting back to Linux and got 2 extra decent nvme and 3 cheap (£9.99) sata SSD 240GB just to experiment with different distros.

Does it work with Nvidia cards?

Valve doesn't need to get into "consoles". They already exist and are called PCs. They already developed steamOS (and are improving on it). That is not to say there won't be a "console". But that will basically be a computer with a "Steam" case and some more or less off the shelf parts inside. But price wise I don't really see the value. There isn't much margin in terms of tech to make games use lower spec machines. So that will make in impossible to drop prices on machines. Anyone can still pick up similar hardware at some big online retailer or a local shop.
But, that is not to say they can't. Like I said, make a pretty "Steam" case, slap a MB, CPU, GPU and all the other bits in and see if it sells. But it's still a PC and won't be cheaper than PS5 or XBOX X, let alone cheaper than the XBOX S. And a lot of people that are into gaming will rather build their own machine anyway. I'd rather steam focus resources on making their OS better and getting all the technical issues solved. There is still a long way to go and honestly, it will never be "compatible" as windows. And not because of steam but because of the vendors. They need to make drivers and such for SteamOS/Linux but it costs money and it's probably not worth it for most brands.
Now, what I would like is for microsoft to rollout a windows "console edition" to replace the xbox OS. Just a slimmer version of windows, tweaked to work "easier" and be more controller friendly. Maybe even look like the xbox ecosystem looks now. I suspect MS might end the physical consoles. But, I dare to dream.
They already make one called the Steam Deck.

If they're making another one, it's likely a successor to that.
