psu decision
hi so this is the situation i am in, currently deciding which hardware i am going to buy to build my first pc, stuck on deciding on the psu, my main options are the corsair rm850w or the rm1000w, the 850w is about £130 and the 1000w is about £150 but goes up to £170 when the places that stock it at £150 run out :

expected specs:

9800x3d
9070 xt
32gb ram
msi MAG X870 TOMAHAWK or MSI MPG B850 EDGE TI

so the 850w has 3 pcie connectors and the 1000w has 4 connectors, the motherboard has an extra connnector for pcie so not sure if to connect that and if i have the 850w one i will only have 2 connectors left for the gpu and some of them need 3 pcie's and i dont want to limit myself to only ones that need 2 connectors, also some of the 9070 xt card say differenct minimum requirements for example the powercolor red devil i think says 900w so not sure if the 850w psu is suitable, so i would prefer to get the 850w to save some money and its easier to get hold of as the 1000w gets going out of stock at the lowest price but not sure about the minimum requirements and the need for more pcie connectors. hope someone can help me sort this out.thanks.

this question leads on from my previous question as the 1000w one has just come back in stock at £150 so i need to decide.

Corsair 850 good choice then it will accept all connected devices HDD cameras etc, never exceed70% of max power. I have the same with a few HDD connected do lots of recording. My PSU these days doesnt even spin as power usage is low ;)

RM850x curently at £131. 5x CPU/PCIe connector + 12V-2x6 connector.
I little pricey for just 850W in my opinion but the number of connectors is very good.

ive had that one for over 2 yrs now and it works great for my 3090Ti
so I would imagine it would work for the newer high end gpus like 4090 and 5090 too

bought mine for €110 and its probably around €140 now but good psus are not cheap and nobody should cheap out on PSUs
Use montech psu. They are good and cheap

The only one on the LABS but it failed testing, very rare good and cheap exists.

Have a look on here and see the ones to avoid like MSI PSU's, FSP, Vetroo and others.

As for power 850W from a good quality PSU is fine, I can see how much my PC draws as it's hooked up to a pure sinewave UPS, my PC peaks around the 750W range, usually less and that's with a 5090 so 850W is fine for a mid tier GPU.

Now a 1000W would be a bit better but just in terms of less wear internally as it would run close to 50% use for max efficiency and give less heat but that's not a huge factor overall.

Motherboard I can only comment on the X870 Tomahawk really as that's what I have, solid board with no problems so far, bought it from seeing good reviews and the past 3 boards I've had were the Tomahawk brand known for a great price/quality standpoint, good amount of USB and 4 M.2 slots, 2 5th gen to CPU and 2 4th gen to chipset.

want to stick will the corsair as i have already decided on it and my previous one was a corsair, just need to decide if 850w is enoughand if i need to connect the mb pcie extra slot and if so will 2 pcies for the gpu be enough, and also do i decide on the make and model of the gpu i want first and then make sure power requirements are met from the psu.

just a update the 1000w one has gone out of stock at £150 so the next in stock one is £180 so need to decide if to wait for it to come back in stock at £150 or pay the £170 or choose the 850w at £130.

If you went for the cheaper psu, the cheaper mobo and the 9700x instead of a 9800x3d you could nearly get a 5080 instead of a 9070xt.

Exactly my thought. Kind of a waste......
Many people do that though. They pay way too much for a mobo instead of investing into a beefier GPU.
And why AMD, though?
People are running 5090s with a 5800X3D without running into a CPU bottleneck. 9800X3D is just not worth the money when you are in for only gaming.

If you’re playing games that heavily utilize the cPU’s cache, the x3d chips are worth it (EU5 coming this November for example).

Until it doesn't fit and leads worse lows.
Fact is, unless you are running 360Hz screens and 5090's you don't need a 9800x3d and it's a waste of money in the same way i9's and i7's used to be to 90% of buyers.

Oh and and a 5800x3d seriously bottlenecks a 5090, that's just idiotic talk lol.
Higher-end Corsair RM1000 series PSUs, such as the RM1000x and RM1000i, use 100% Japanese capacitors. The 850x and 850e models use the same series capacitors.

This is one of the most important factors when purchasing a PSU.

I support EVGA because every tier of their PSU lines use Japanese capacitors which last over 10+ years, no matter if that PSU is low tier or high tier, EVGA uses only the best capacitors.

It is a shame about the End-of-Life of EVGA GPU's as they were one of the best GPU manufacturers in the world with their top-notch factory OC and cooling solutions.

Japanese vs Chinese capacitors, what's the difference?

It all lies within the advanced materials used in manufacturing plus Japan never goes cheap (for the most part) and also has world-class quality control, even outpacing the USA.
