12400f or 5600?
i'm currently planning on upgrading my i5 8600k to one of these CPUs
i'll need a new motherboard ether way. My budget for everything (CPU/Mobo/RAM) is a hard $450 CAD

12400f = $150 CAD/$108.85 USD

5600 = $176 CAD/$127.72 USD

From benchmarks the 12400f is usually ~5% faster, but decent motherboards are more expensive and i need to choose between DDR4 or DDR5. i do currently already have 2x8gb ddr4 3200mhz sticks. which i was thinking of maybe reusing and buying another 16gb. Also the LGA 1700 socket supports up to the 14th gen. what cpu should i get?

The 12400 is tested with DDR5 there, so it might be a bit behind with DDR4. It will probably be a bit faster outside games.

If you want to consider upgrade options offered by either platform...

LGA 1700 will allow Raptor Lake... in theory. But I wouldn't trust one given their known issues. Outside tech circles, the issues probably aren't known about, and your average person isn't going to be updating their BIOS. I've seen people with ones that have exhibited crashing issues (meaning they are degraded and unstable at stock) "solve" the issue by down-clocking them with XTU and then considering it "in working order" because they either can't be bothered to do an RMA, or refuse to believe it's faulty because they "got it working"). So I'd say that leaves "trustworthy" upgrade options as the 12600K, 12700K, and 12900K. And you'll still be on DDR4 with them.

AM4 will allow you for a 5700X3D or 5800X3D upgrade from the used market in some years when they are cheaper. That may or may not be worth it though. The 5800X3D is a bit better than the 12900K on average in games (and is worse outside games), and sometimes competes with 13th/14th generation CPUs (again, only in games). The 5700X3D will likely be the more worthwhile one and is probably closer to a 12700K/13600K or so.

If you have no future upgrade plans, flip a coin or take the cheaper one.

I do agree with what someone said earlier and would consider saving until you can get an entry level CPU for AM5. It will cost a little more, but in turn, it will be a little faster than the options you're looking at and will also have much more worthwhile upgrade options. You don't have to do this, and maybe you're saving two or three hundred not to do it, which would make the cheaper options you're looking at more viable. But usually the prices aren't that far apart.

Whatever you do, if you go with a DDR4 option, get 32 GB soon. DDR4 pricing isn't as good anymore, and it's not going to get better. If you find out you need more RAM later, it might end up being more costly. And then you compare 32 GB pricing, the AM5 route probably looks better.

Probably better to look at AMD AM5 + 9600X
2x 16GB DDR5-6000

9600x around 300CAD which doesn't leave much for ram/mobo
Then perhaps...

B550 board

5600 minimum but try to aim higher if available or possible such as an X3D CPU model for AM4

2x 16GB DDR4 3200 or 3600

What did you have in mind for GPU?

This helps determine a good better then needed PSU to use
am4/am5 socket - problems with usb devices(connecting/disconnecting, strange behavior like mouse change speed by itself, keyboard keypress sometimes not registered), problems with audio(audio noises, crackling), bad uefi firmware can damage cpu
1700 socket, bad usefi firmware can damage cpu

what is your reasoning behind getting the 5600 over the 12400f?

also Parts i already have.
GPU : 4060
RAM: 2x8gb ddr4 3200mhz CL16
PSU : MSI MAG A750GL PCIE 5 750W
Cooler : Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition (it has an AM4 bracket adaptor but i don't think it'll work for LGA1700 or AM5)

Maybe your Motherboard or you don't know how to configure the bios and OS power settings.

I've done countless builds. Intel everything... AMD AM4, AM5. Very very rare to have such issues.

what u dont understand???? 12400 is 1700 socket, ryzen 5 5600 am4 socket, i info you about problems on both platforms. U already watch benchmarks 12400 vs 5600, so what u dont understand????

Get a used board for the 8600K or save until you can afford either because anything less than that isn't worth using.
