Steam OS for PC
With the end of W10 this year will there be a version of steam OS for pc available to make the switch?

We don't know when SteamOS desktop will be ready, and it's not going to be the magical solution for all of people's problems, it's just a custom version of Arch and won't be anything particularly special compared to what's already available on the Deck, which isn't special, it has all of the usual hallmarks of Linux

Nobody except Valve knows. Maybe Valve Time. Until then, use any Arch derivative since latest SteamOS is based on Arch Linux.
I'm more excited for KDE Linux[community.kde.org]. (Formerly "Project Banana".)

It has a lot in common with SteamOS actually. It's Arch based, has an immutable base system, Btrfs, encryption of all mutable data, recovery partition for if things go wrong, Flatpak as the default, Wayland session by default, and of course KDE Plasma as the desktop interface.

Unlike SteamOS, it will be better suited for general desktop use, rather than aimed at handhelds and "Steam Machine" set top boxes.

Any reason you don't want to switch to any other Linux?

it will definitely be out before the end of windows 10s lifetime. that's a given. it would be extremely unwise of valve to NOT release it. for now, just install arch or any of its derivatives.

all steamOS, and any distro is; just a series of tweaks, apps, etc(in layman's terms( that are presetup for you)-- its entirely possible to just install arch, kde, steam, drivers and bam. you have steamOS. that's all it is..
Man, I won't lie. I am pretty hyped for this, especially with it having the potential to turn the tables and give people a viable alternative to Windows.

I've been on various versions of Linux (Currently Garuda KDE) and even if it does clunk a little in some aspects, I already know I'm not going back to windows.
With more adoption and more incentive for developers to also cater for linux.. the future can only be better.

Viva low resolution!

It's overhype, it's not going to do anything to give people an alternative if they weren't already enticed by other Arch distros, because that's all it is.

A massive portion of Windows games and software won't work any differently on SteamOS desktop, it's just a custom version of Arch built by a pretty small company that likely sees Linux as a contingency plan because Microsoft is slowly pushing their customers away.

1 1/2 months left and still no Steam OS for PC.

Just as in the other dated topic, you can use linux, you choosing not to is not a steam/valve issue.

No chance until Wayland gets fixed.
Is this really 2015 (new generation of gamers I guess)?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_Machine_(computer)

The failed (and revamped) Linux protocol "SteamOS" was devised in 2015 and discontinued in 2017/2018 yet revised for Steam Deck in 2022 (and present/future alternative PC OS).

You know, there are people that still use the original SteamOS (2015) with success and a revamp into 2025 would be in relation to the popularity increase of Linux OS.

I find SteamOS fascinating as it was forgotten, but then revamped historically, viability vs.

I had linux at uni and back then it was going to change the world of computing... some 30 years on and I'm still waiting.

*tips hat*

Glad to see there are people more OG than I am in the Steam "Hardware and Operating Systems" Forum where, obviously, generations of PC helpers come alive.
