xp has higher system reqs, if the build supports xp, go ahead,

or maybe add a small ssd for dual boot
(ide-sata adapters are cheap if the board doesnt have sata ports, and 1t or smaller sata ssds are dirt cheap too)
this ide-sata adapter has master/slave jumper so you can use it with another drive on the ide chain (one drive set to master, other to slave, or both to cs if using 80pn cable)

and check for mobo and other drivers for xp

it has some changes, but most can be set to look and work like win 9x
and any game for win 9x and dos can work on xp
you gotta update to Windows 1.0 ( 1985 ) so you can play more modern games

I already did it but I try some new things
virtiual machines is the simplest to do if you know how.

vmware or virtualbox

some games need win9x like nhl98. it wrote directly to the video card back then

It was able to, yes. But I think it lost support rather quickly.

It was about 4-5 years; wether that is "rather quickly" or not is debatable. However, it was relatively quick in comparison to Windows XP/Vista and Windows 7/8/8.1 support.

The Steam client dropped support for Windows 98 and Windows ME in June 2007

i recommend to install the OS used in the original Macintosh instead, as it is more feature rich and also gives you cool points

also, in case some of y'all haven't noticed, the OP is making a joke, don't take this too literal and with a grain of salt, and play along
I think you should build a mechanical computer and game on that.
