remote play works anywhere as long as host internet upload is 30+mb/s
including pc-pc, phone, link hardware, tv, or other device with steam desktop client or link app
The biggest annoyance for me right now is steam controller / deck controls custom controller profile pass-through. If you launch moonlight or steam link apps, that's the "game" the deck sees, and so if you have a steam controller plugged in or are streaming while undocked with your deck, you have no way of seeing community controller profiles per-game you're actually playing (the deck has no way of knowing what game moonlight / steam link apps are streaming). Combine this with the persistent bugs around saving / applying personal controller profiles means that the deck as a steam link hardware replacement platform is a ways off.
For now, I've found the best overall experience, in terms of ease of use, controller profiles, managing multiple controllers, managing resolution, etc, is the Steam Link hardware, despite its lack of support and sometimes buginess.
1. Docked steam deck
A. Native "remote play"
Access by being on the same network as your host PC. Under a given game you'll have an arrow drop-down next to "play" button for game. You select "stream from (host)".
Usability: Poor.
Known bugs:
* If using software decoding, the steam quick menu won't appear when pressing steam / Xbox option on controller, though you can hear it launch and navigate around it hearing navigation noises
* Controller pass through is buggy, especially for steam controllers
* You must use software decoding (uncheck hardware decoding in advanced remote play options on steam deck side) or will be unplayably choppy or simply not launch
* If you are docked with Ethernet, you must disable wifi or streaming will crash on launch
* If there is a pending steam deck update, you must install it or streaming option won't be listed
B. Moonlight app with sunshine installed on host
Usability: fair for windows hosts, broken for Linux hosts
Works basically out of the box. However, steam deck won't detect what game you're playing beyond "moonlight," so you must create custom controller profiles manually for every game you want to play through moonlight
Note this is the only option for playing non steam games installed on the host (emulators)
2. Steam link
Pending testing
3. Android device running steam link app
Pending testing
Conclusion: there is no viable docked streaming option in 2025 for Linux hosts. For windows hosts, the only viable option is moonlight. For undocked steam deck, steam remote play works passably well.
Note that there are per-game issues as well. For example, baldurs gate 3 crashes frequently when streaming.
