But news flash: you're not the first to ask for this, and don't worry ... you won't be the last.
It could be like the achievements, where we can choose which ones to showcase on our profile. Just the featured badge isn't enough.
Usually it's people wanting to pick specific badges to go where the recent badges are displayed, not to hide them altogether. I get why Valve hasn't let that specific suggestion happen.
But considering how quickly Valve made it possible for people to hide Profile Awards from their profile, I am surprised they haven't done this as well. Letting people not display their recent badges from their profile would probably solve a lot of the complaints about uncontrolled elements on their profile.
Because every time you buy a game, the Game Collector badge gets pushed to the most recent position. Don't want it on your profile, then don't buy any new games, which is probably not what Valve wants. Then they get hit once a year with the Years of Service badge, yet another one they may not want to display. Hiding the recent badges would be a fairly simple option to add and would make those kinds of people much happier.
Personally, I wouldn't use it. I'm not that obsessed about my profile. Or at least, not about some small part I don't have control over.
