Simultaneous download and update needs to go
SOLVED - It was on my end. Update ethernet drivers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We at the very least need an option to disable the simultaneous download and patch of games. I can download a fresh game at 80 MB/s but the same game to install an update only happens at 20 MB/s.

We should be able to download an update and patch it AFTER the download is complete. Please give us that option.

Very few of the games I have, that need updates, do both at the same time. I almost always see the download complete and then initiate the patch. The ones that kind of do both are those notorious games that always have complicated patches, like ARK. I have all of my game set to immediate updates except for a few. Ark being one.
They changed the compression algorithm in May. Any update released since then should allow you to decompress the data much faster.

Considering those numbers were from the update that was released today, it's still too slow.

what sort of hard drive are you downloading/installing/patching to?

old style spinning hard drivers do suffer a bit, you shouldnt be getting issues with an M.2

have you noticed a particular game thats really bad as an example?

from before the new style patching system conan exiles for example was terrible at patching even on really good systems.

It's really anything that's a larger patch, like over 5 Gb. The most recent example which lead to my original post was No Man's Sky at 19.4 Gb which took 20-30 minutes. I could have redownloaded the entire game in 5 minutes.

its odd you are experiencing issues on an m.2 drive, im not sure how normal that is.
To close this out:

Spent a lot of time digging. The download hit an all time low after I got a new gateway from my ISP. After several days of digging the solution was to update my ethernet driver. Now, everything that is large enough to ramp to max download holds at 65-70 MB/s.
