Payment with Bancontact is changed.
Hello,

A couple weeks ago, payment with Bancontact could be done using 2 options.
Or you scanned a QR code or you used your card with a cardreader.
Now there remains only 1 option. Alas, the QR code.

Why is this changed? Why not leave both options?
Some people don't have smartphones or don't want them. I don't think smartphones are bad, but I don't want one because I think they make people asocial. But enough about that. It is the QR codes I really dislike. They are just blocks without any information about where they will send you. So I don't trust them. And I refuse to use them even if I could.

I think extra options to pay are very good, so you must please leave options for everyone.

I solved the problem with paying with Paypal, which at first didn't work on the steam-client on PC. It only worked when I opened steam in Chrome. And to transfer money on my Paypal, I used Bancontact (with the 2 options to pay from before). This is a roundabout way of doing things and I don't think they are necessary at all. And I don't think I'm the only human in the world without a smartphone. They are not mandatory, so don't treat them as they are.

So if you can please change the things how they were, I would be very grateful.

Ask the payment provider, Bancontact, about it, not Valve.

I just did what you asked.
But the problem was that it worked like before with Bancontact from Paypal and not the Bancontact from Steam. The former had the options from before and the latter had just the QR-code.

Wanted to buy the Lego Jurassic Park game, had the same issue.
Problem is I don't have Paypal and won't ever.
Workaround could be buying physical coupons I guess...

Edit: there's multiple third-party online storefronts too that still allow you to use your card reader to buy legitimate codes for wallet funds.

It seem's that 32% of belgium gamer cannot buy game on steam anymore. That's the number of belgian that used this service.

If steam doesn't speak with the service they have implemented we are screwed forever.

Come 2026 - 2027 Bancontact, like Ideal, will be going away in exchange for Wero. And that's going to either require a smartphone to work like an actual e-wallet, or require you to sign and confirm payments via your electronic banking environment with your own bank directly. Though whether the second will be supported will be actually up to your bank.

As such, odds are exceptionally low that Valve would invest any effort in trying to get Bancontact fully working via cardreader again. (Friendly reminder: they left the entirety of Germany hanging for titles requiring age verification for a decade and counting.)

Wero is not destined to replace bancontact in belgium, it's an additional method of exchange using only your phone. Good luck having this used in majority in belgium even in 2026 lol.

Oh well, i will pirate my game then, good luck to steam if they want to make a service problem in belgium and loose litteraly millions of dollars.

Yes, I have also complained about this inability to not be able to pay using a feature from a legal bank account. For some reason Steam insists on borrowing money from banks to pay for their games. This change in policy absolutely sucks and simply means less income for Steam and all the Bancontact involved parties!


There is an elaborate work-around though: you can pay using "paysafecard" because they do accept payment with bancontact card. That also means the additional benefit of not having to store any remaining amount on your Steam account because they are not earning it when they treat customers like this.
