On September 17, 2025, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform invited Valve President Gabe Newell to testify at a hearing on October 8.
Dear Steam: this letter is directed to Gabe Newell and the whole steam staff.
First off i love you, Portal 1 & 2 are fundamental moments of my childhood. Ive been on this platform for 14 years, skyrim was my first game and now through the years i have over a hundred games, some of which have thousands of hours in them. please i beg of you do not bend the kneel to these fascist freaks destroying this country. you are the only reason i manage to get through my day. i will literally implode if the government takes away my steam.

The government has no purview to "take away your Steam."

GabeN doesnt even need to show up. He can send someone else, or no one. He hasnt been subpoenaed.

To be fair, the current president could not care less what purview the government has. If he decides he wants to shut down Steam, he's not going to let anyone stop him.

This is 100% true.
These little news episodes happen every time, like once every two years regardless of president or party. Nothing ever comes from them. These episodes only exist to stress people out. There is no need to worry especially with how common they are.
We already have a thread about this;

Its not "fascist" to ask what a service is doing to combat extremist people inciting murder and assassinations on various platforms. :smokeybear:

It's also an invitation quite literally for the digital documents file name, and any politician worth anything knows steam isn't a hotbed of extremism. One only needs to look at reddit, bluesky, discord etc to see an incredible amount of extremism without moderation.

You forgot 4chan, twitter, and facebook.

Oh and by the way discord doesn't do anything about anyone that violates their ToS, unless it's for things that they have to pay for Nitro to access normally. Doesn't matter your political affiliation or severity of crime. I'd know, I've tried to get people openly engaging in grooming removed from the platform and they still have the same account 8 years later. And keep in mind, I had all the proof they asked for when issuing reports about that kind of stuff and more.

And because of their policy to never give out user information to anyone, even law enforcement, I couldn't just go and put a tip in to the FBI.

To be fair we have had two pretty significant assassination attempts as of late, one successful and the other only unsuccessful by inches. The water is boiling hot at this point. Some worry IS warranted.

But still it is important not to let "Congressmen talking" episodes get you worked up. The news thrives on you getting anxious constantly.

You left one out. Guess that one doesn't count for some reason.

I'm not worried, nor is valve. :smokeybear:

What was the other one? Immediate search displays Kirk, one failed for a singer "Fazilpuria".

Just looked this up, she was shot dead on June 14th of this year along with her husband. Not to mention, she was a democrat. Which kinda annihiliates the whole, "The left is the only side engaging in extremism" narrative.

I would not expect Valve to be worried or counsel them that they need to be worried to be sure but given you are not a Valve employee you would not be able to say so with certainty.

The reason it may not count may surprise you.

They know its a false narrative. In fact the DOJ under Trump's orders removed a report on their own site and got caught red handed doing it.

The report confirmed that most violent extremism is performed by the right, and even when those on the left perform extremist events its far more likely to be targeted towards property and not physical harm. The report was archived and they tried to remove it so people wouldn't read it.

It gets worse than that.
Trump just removed a study from the Department of Justice web site because it clearly demonstrates that the majority of ideologically-driven violence is carried out by the right.

But the censor-happy, fascist rapist-in chief isn't going to let a little thing like the truth get in the way of sowing chaos to aid his rise to dictatorship.

Edit: Brian beat me to it.

Are you going to actually add anything to the discussion or just keep incorrectly parroting things people have said to you without understanding the context behind it?

As for the post itself, sounds more like a conference to basically ensure proper steps are being taken to prevent the cultivation of harmful and extremist rhetoric, especially in organized groups where it might more likely translate to some kind of potential action being taken.

Yup, I mean it’s pretty clear to anyone arguing in good faith there’s bad actors on both sides. One side might put more emphasis on their own due to either being more in the know about it or their own personal leanings (for example not being aware of the Melissa Hortman example), but to say one side is completely free from extremist pockets of certain mentality and rhetoric is just someone lying to themselves.
