The days of accepting random requests ended over a decade ago, personally.
That said you need to practice basic internet safety, especially with people you don't know. Don't click on unfamiliar links, and even if they look legit, you're usually better off not clicking on them anyway, and always double, triple check before you click on anything if you DO decide to click on a link - but again, if someone you don't know is sending you links, that is a red flag that they are trying to scam or phish you.
Obviously, don't give away passwords or personal information either.
Nothing bad will happen to you if you accept a friend request.
Just don't click on random links and never give away your Steam login details.
