Request: Display local time directly in-game
As it is possible to have an FPS counter visible on screen, would be possible to have local time displayed it too, one by one or (at worst) together?

This is a feature that some players always dream of, to the point that they play in window mode, or keep an alarm clock next to their screen, or keep bothering developers of this or that game for adding it. Well, the Steam Overlay looks a good solution for both players and developers. The only cons is that not every player make use of the Steam Overlay.

I'm an average player so most likely I'm not aware of the several "environments" that can be used and possible issues with them but, I still believe that this feature may reach quite a number of users : ) Other thoughts?

Edit: to avoid misunderstandings, I mean it to be visible like the FPS counter, that it is on the game screen, always visible, without to Shift+Tab twice.

Edit#2: to suggest alternatives to the requested feature, like the few examples I already wrote above, will be regarded as off-topic and ignored. Alternatives are not the answer to this request but the reason for it. Anyway the best one is to ask Siri "What time is it?" : P

The time IS displayed in the overlay: top left. So "keeping an alarm clock or playing windowed" is silly, and I think you pulled it out of your ass.

Use a clock and set it right in front of you, use your cell right beside you and set an alarm on it, have a TV on in the room, have a second screen on.

If you are "not aware of your environment" to the point that you don't look at a clock sitting beside you, then you're gonna ignore the clock on the screen too.

I like the real time clock overlay suggestion, and all the 'why invent a car if a horse carriage will get you there' reactions make me laugh :D

It doesn't matter that YOU consider it off topic, its not off topic as we are pointing out there are far better ways.

Public forum and what you deem off topic is not off topic. Just examples of different and even some better alternatives that already exist.

Any product or software change has to be vetted. That means considering ALL things related to the idea. Both the good AND the bad. 99.9% of all idea never leave the idea stage. Most being bad ideas with 0 way to be effective without major flaws and others that may be considered good or workable but things like the costs to implement outweigh any benefit

Sure those using MSI Afterburner would be happy of it, and it is a better way than asking Siri, I guess.

And thanks for your comments, they both bring new ideas and keep the thread alive : )

Still relevant. Why isn't this a thing?

It would allow us adult players to better balance and separate our professional and playing schedules. We can check the real time without a problem and don't have to tab out nervously all the time to be sure we stay within our own time limit.
I don't want to have to rearrange the clocks in my room if there is no need to do so. If we can see the time when pressing Shift + Tab, why would it be hard to just display that time overlay over the game all the time by option?

It would also be a great thing to prevent or battle video game addiction, since players can more easily refrain from playing too long on week days. It would be a great tool for self-control.
Maybe it would be even better to add an integrated timer as well. Japan and South Korea have big problems with video game addiction and rising suicide rates/social isolation because of it. We shouldn't copy or just conserve the current mechanisms, but actively support or develope systems and functions that help to prevent said problems. The physiological and social life as well as overall health are some of the most important things to consider for a community in my opinion.

My personal opinion is that adding such a small feature is surely within Valve's capabilities and would only have positive and no negative effects. Therefore I don't understand the other users here criticizing OP. You have nothing to lose and could achieve something really positive for our community.

You can LITERALLY hit 2 buttons that won't even minimize your game and voila, your time. It's already part of the overlay.

Why hit two buttons if you would need none? Also tabbing out breaks immersion.

Why are you literally asking for features/functions to NOT be implemented into Steam? Are you losing money in any way by this or are you just so selfish/hostile that you have to criticize everything that just doesn't affect or benefit you personally?

You know, the old mobile phones might work as well for making phone calls as the new smartphones, but most people will still use a smartphone, because they like the additional functionality. You don't have to use a smartphone. Therefore there is no good reason to forbid other people to use one.

Meaning: You might have a working product, but that doesn't mean that it can't or shouldn't be improved, because the additional functionality might be beneficial to people who need or appreciate it. If you have nothing to lose in the process, why would you prevent them from improving the product and making their lifes better?
