DirectX has complete control of the screen so just about nothing will pop up on you.
There are probably keyboard indicator lights that go off too.
So, THAT'S what it is. I saw the battery bar and thought it was some Thinkpad power app (I'm on a Thinkpad). So that's coming from Steam! Pretty cool. Learn something new every day. :)
@JOKER since 92' I would suggest you to try administrator mode. You need to get both application exe's on administrator mode or overlay won't work, for every game.
