Why does Steam scatter my desktop icons all over the place

Every time I finish playing a game, my desktop icons just randomly go all over the place and I have to put them back in order.

You still have icons on your desktop? Time to back them up and move them out of the way.
Unfortunately even Vista and 7 re-shuffle the desktop icons when the screen resolution changes. OP did not mention Windows XP. Linux will do the same, except not usually quite as big of mess afterwards.
