How do I get a user banned for scamming?
I recently had someone who has been on my friend's list for a long time message me out of the blue.

It was a link to beta test for a popular upcoming game.

Trusting them because they were on my friend's list, I loaded the link, had to login to Steam etc. Things looked legit, but it didn't work in the end.

I pretty much instantly realized I had been tricked and changed my Steam password.

I reported the user from their profile page but nothing has happened.

This user needs to be banned but I don't know how.

You did the correct thing to report them via their profile. Steam will not notify you of the outcome of your report, that is between steam and the account holder.

It is highly likely your friend account was hijacked, scammers do no use their own accounts to scam others but rather accounts they have stolen. By you reporting the account, steam would have locked the account down which gives the original owner chance to recover it back before any further damage can be done to the account..

  1. Your friend probably fell for a scam and got their account hijacked. Which is a bit more plausible than your friend becoming a villain, but stupid enough to use their personal account for an obvious scam.
  2. You don't have all the information, which is why your expectations are unreasonable. And even setting that aside, Valve doesn't need to operate on your schedule or generate the outcomes you expect.
  3. Report, block, move on. It's Valve's problem now. And chances are you don't want a friend/acquaintance to get banned because you're pissed at the guy who hijacked their account. Take a chill pill and let things work out.

Accounts used to scam are already compromised accounts that the creator is not aware it is, or never bothered to recover the account.

A scammer never uses their own account as it would be traceable.

Reporting the account locks it from being used again by the scammer.

Calm down. They were on my friend's list. They are not my friend.

They tried to hack my account. Of all accounts, the most unforgivable one to attempt to hack is mine.

Nx Machina makes a fantastic point. If someone has an account that gets hacked and then used by scammers, it is their fault.

When I fell for their attempt to scam me I changed my pw IMMEDIATELY.

I have no respect for those who do not protect what is theirs.

And I'm not asking Valve to operate on my schedule or generate the outcomes I expect.

I'm expecting them to operate on a reasonable schedule and generate the outcome that is correct and fair.

best advice is to report, remove/block, move on. also change your passwords. account bans are not instant, Valve needs to look into it
