My computer freeze when i start steam.
Until recently, everything was fine, but starting about a week ago, whenever I launch Steam, my PC freezes for about 2–3 seconds. My specs (Ryzen 7 5700X3D, RTX 4070 Super, 32GB RAM) should be more than sufficient.

At first, I thought it was because I had Steam set to run on startup, since the freeze happened right after logging into Windows. But even after disabling auto-start and launching Steam manually, the same issue occurs.

During the freeze, my mouse cursor stutters and then suddenly jumps to a different position, and even the loading spinner cursor stops moving.

I even reinstalled Windows and tested with only Steam installed, but the exact same freezing still happens.

Whether I turn the overlay on or off, the freezing still happens.

Does anyone know how to fix this? It’s driving me crazy.

It's caused by your monitor having a high number of resolution/refresh rate combinations and the NT api used to get them being a very slow serialized task

Disable HW acceleration for web views & restart Steam.
Report results.

@ReBoot Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem.

In that Guru3D thread, people are talking about Nvidia cards specifically. And that reminds me, start Steam with the
-disable-overlay-gpu-pri
parameter. That's a workaround for a bug in the driver which causes "interesting" things to happen in conjunction with Steam.

Also, the thread actually does name a specific cause and a targeted solution, see https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/short-mouse-freezes-on-specific-actions-in-windows.449874/#post-6178241

Right there, baby. This is the absolute answer:

Go to the Steam.exe, right-click then click "Properties" and in the target field leave a space and then add that launch command:
-disable-overlay-gpu-pri

So it should look like this (different drive location though) ↓

H:\Steam\steam.exe -disable-overlay-gpu-pri

The Steam Client loaded within 8-10 seconds. Retested with the Steam Client plus console and same thing, loaded within 8-10 seconds.

This is the second answer to solve my multiple display Z-fighting/resolution clashing issue.

Gold, pure ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gold.
