Onedrive
I’m not sure if anyone posted this yet but is it possible to not have the steam game files default to the one drive folder

I would love to know if that's possible. I have completely removed OneDrive from my Windows 11 Pro system, but some (if not all) Steam games insist on using the

C:\Users\[username]\OneDrive\Documents

section of the folder tree. Some games use a [Game Name] sub-folder, others use a [publisher]\[Game Name] sub-folder, sttll others use a my games\[Game Name] sub-folder, and so on. I found out the hard way after deleting the OneDrive\Documents folder only to discover most (if not all) of my saved game files gone.

Does anyone know if this controlled by a single Steam setting for all games or by a separate setting for each game (e.g., in a .INI or some other configuration file)?

I don't have a solution other than to make sure that OneDrive bull crap is turned off from the start. The sneaky way Microsoft goes about enabling it for everyone by default should be made a crime.

There is no Steam setting as games are responsible for choosing where to save files. And they're not actually choosing the OneDrive equivalents of those folders. That Microsoft's design to replicate the Documents folder under the OneDrive folder which they then sync with the OneDrive cloud.
*sigh* no steam dont control anything. the developers decide where to put the saves.. and they use default 'my documents' windows object of the current user most of the time. they can also decide to save in user/appdata folder. of if its a steampowered game its in the steam/userdata folder

you did delete onedrive but you didn't revert the 'my documents' to the default folder in your profile. open properties of documents in explorer and go to the 'path' tab

No its MS onedrive that take controll over document area, you can find games from the past that use Document area , they are all move to onedrive, how you do not know this is odd,

If you turn off onedrive it cant save there and will use Document folder again.

And yes one drive is made by space monkey, ( AND yes they are and past backup master can tell you such. ) make sure you have made a backup content first at other drive before you try fix MS onedrive and Document folder if this is a how to teminating onedrive or clean up Document. ppl have lost files on this and forget onedrive is a sync app and actual not a backup solution.

I bet the other helper here should know this,

And its your job to contact MS onedriver and tell them you want a better folder controll over what game folder its should sync and not. ( but ppl dont do that. )

Example i had ESO installed with mods ( you guess it why will i need onedrive with mods )

So you see its not games devs theree so it it onedrive, so you see now why we dont always agree here in who is doing what, exatly what steam forum is about, and then you get it its not about me. ( its onedrive that did this to our system ) with try be master of folder access after ransomware issue, the other helper seem to have forgot that part fair enough. but either way this is the issue what that app has done and not actual a steam issue or game devs issue.

MS is issue here with a so bad code option because they think PC user dont know how backup or sync works, and have automated the process, because so many complain over it then they had hackers that did this to things in Document folder , and this is where you are now.

As i said im sure alot of helper know this, then they rethink over it.

ps.
Dont forget ondrive has been update and change a few times, someday they might get it right.

and OP you can also say NO game devs do not go back and fix old games that do not save in Document folder so either way its a NO.

Try game save manager app, might be better for you, or learn old ways and do this yourself as we other learn it.
