Debit cards don't work. Only credit cards.
Age Assurance under the UK Online Safety Act
can even find a way to official contact steam about this through their very limited select the most applicable answer for support tab things.
You said "bank card" which is ambiguous. Is it a credit card, or a debit card? If it's a debit card, see the post above yours.
Look at your bank card, do you see the word debit on it?
Only credit cards work not debit cards.
Yes, I was deliberately vague.
Yes, its a debit card.
As a side, that post wasn't their when i initially responded.
Why would valve require it to be a credit card (a card that i dont have btw and am not signing up to have a card that I can have debt with.) as far as i know credit card was just a generic term when talking about debit or credit cards, it was not specificly exluding debit cards.
Well being deliberately vague when asking for help doesn't really result in good help. It does waste time by forcing other parties to ask clarifying questions.
As for the terminology, I would say you're somewhat mistaken. I mean maybe in casual conversation where the detail doesn't matter, IE colloquially, it doesn't matter if you say debit, credit or bank card for the sake of some anecdote, that's one thing. But when you venture into the realm of actual factual banking issues, debit cards and credit cards are explicitly and clearly two different things. To be clear, I wasn't trying to bust your balls or anything, so apologies if it came across like that.
As to answer your question about why credit cards and not debit cards. The specifications of what counts as valid age confirming evidence, credit cards are accepted, and debit cards aren't. That's not Valve's decision. That's part of the UK's decision. Allegedly it has to do with 16 year olds being able to get debit cards, but you have to be 18 to get a credit card.
I wouldn't be surprised if additional options are added later by Valve, but for the moment, it's credit card or wait. It kinda seems like their initial implementation was a bit rushed to meet the deadline so verification support is minimal. Valve already deals with CC's so it's low hanging fruit to get started with.
Although, talk to German users, they've been blocked from adult content for years because of their more stringent verification requirements Valve isn't interested in adopting.
If Valve doesn't make any changes and other stores have additional verification options, you might just have to start using those stores for some games if you're determined not to have a credit card.
Fair enough, I didn't mean to rile anyone's feathers with my vagueness, but, sure if what your saying is true, which no reason to doubt it and I'm not an expert in the law, it sounds fair enough, I hope they add more options sooner rather than later.
It's also hard to know what either party knows and what information they need. Sometimes you can speed up that process if you know enough and provide most of the complete and accurate information up front. Otherwise extra time to sort out details.
I kind of suspected that 'credit card' might have been meant literally. I'll plug it in and give it a try.
Many, many thanks again for taking the time to reply.
