Download speed constantly dropping to 0 B/s
I'm trying to update my games but this Helldivers update has been going for upwards of 15 hours. The download speed keeps constantly dropping to 0 MB/s. I have tried clearing the steam download cache, no fix.

I saw discussions elsewhere on reddit explaining that this may happen due to a HDD write speed bottleneck. Looking at my task manager, I see that my extra storage HDD (E:/) is at 100% when this is happening. However this shouldn't be affecting this download, as my OS, the game I'm trying to update, and Steam itself are installed on my main SSD (C:/). The C drive is set as my default download location for steam as well.

Any ideas why this might be happening? Is Steam directing those files through E:/ then into C:/ for some reason? How do I stop it from doing that? There's no reason a 20gb update should be taking this long.

Thanks in advance!

If you are on Win7 or some versions of Win10, then the new Steam's unpacking algorithm may be the issue.
I would recommend you to check the logs in C:\Program Files\Steam\logs\content_log.txt folder. We would be able to narrow the problem.

For instance, if it's like this:

[2025-08-28 18:30:26] Failed unpacking chunk
[2025-08-28 18:30:26] Marking bad download source
[2025-08-28 18:30:26] Failed unpacking chunk

Then that algorithm is 100% the culprit.

Originally posted by Taylor Sherman:
To explain further, we recently enabled a new compression algorithm which is vastly better-performing, and will enable faster downloads with much lower CPU load on clients. It will also improve unlock times for preloads for users on SSD (for spinning disks, the disk writes are the bottleneck). This was good just to save CPU load but it is also necessary for the faster (> 1Gbps) internet speeds people have in some places now, and it also really improves the experience on the Steam Deck.

New content coming in to Steam is now being compressed with this algorithm; existing content will not be converted. So if you're on an old client version for any of the reasons discussed here, there will still be many games in the catalog you can download and play (so long as they are not being updated, or if you can pin them to a particular build using branches supplied by the developer). Unfortunately we can't support having the data in both formats for new content.

Thanks for the info! I'm on Win11 but just updated from Win10 earlier today as I suspected that may be an issue.

I don't see the issue you described in the content_log, but does anything look out of place in this log? Posting an excerpt that looks off to me but I lack the knowledge to determine what might be wrong.

Yes, the logs give us the direction. It seems this person had the same issue. Currently, I am looking for a solution. Have you tried changing the download region?

Most likely it's a problem on the Comcast side.
Anyway, this is what I have managed to find so far:

1. Flush DNS cache:
  1. Exit from Steam
  2. Open Command Prompt as Administrator: Click the Start button, type cmd,
    then right-click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator";
  3. Enter the command: In the Command Prompt window,
    type ipconfig/flushdns and press Enter;
  4. Confirm success: You will see a message confirming that the DNS Resolver Cache
    was successfully flushed.

2. Try to change the download region in settings (Steam > Settings > Downloads);

3. Repair Steam service:
  1. Exit from Steam;
  2. Open Command Prompt as Administrator: Click the Start button, type cmd,
    then right-click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator";
  3. Enter the command: In the "Run" dialog box, type the following command (I assume
    that's the the path you used to find the logs):
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe" /repair
  4. Run the command: Press Enter or click OK.

4. Changing the Comcast DNS server to Google Public DNS/Cloudflare DNS:
  1. Exit Steam;
  2. Open Settings: Press the Windows key + I or right-click the Start button and
    select Settings;
  3. Navigate to Network Settings: Go to Network & internet;
  4. Select Your Connection: Choose the network adapter you're using (Wi-Fi or
    Ethernet);
  5. Go to Properties: Click on Hardware properties or View additional properties;
  6. Edit DNS Settings: Scroll to DNS server assignment and click the Edit button;
  7. Choose Manual: Select Manual from the drop-down menu;
  8. Enable IPv4: Turn on the IPv4 toggle switch;
  9. Enter Public DNS Addresses: Input the desired public DNS server addresses
    into the Preferred DNS and Alternate DNS fields
    Google Public DNS: 8.8.8.8 (primary) and 8.8.4.4 (secondary)
    Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 (optional)
  10. Save Changes: Click the Save button to apply your new DNS settings.

Good luck!

[2025-08-27 17:27:44] ContentServerDirectoryService::BYieldingGetServersForSteamPipe failed (Transport Request Not Sent / Result No Connection)

Result No Connection <----- you lost connection to steam

any wifi or VPN that prolong jumps and Latency can do that if you get a timeout among you and steam server.

there was a steam user that notice in a log somewhere with 3000 milisec as timeout
why i remember this i do not know but you have get past this and why it post "No Connection"

feel free to ask steam support or own ISP, why it is so, in your case i will test with spare test pc to make sure its not own PC that do it.

Windows OS also use TTL that means jumps per router, im not sure this is relevant but anything past was it 128 i think it was, so use VPN might get you there.

as i said not so simple to ID then most PC user do not have this problem. you have no connection but with what cause this.

ps.
make sure windows date/time/country is in sync, this is not a joke ( Global communication actual require logs and some apps use that to stamp time, why will global comminication not need this. ( this is learn from server you cant communicating with logs when time is wrong.

see we are not so stupid here,

"No Connection" into steam, is dead give away, ( Comcast or what they are doing i cant tell you )
require they look at it.

Still dont explan option 3 that you need to repaire own steam services.
you could have been unlucky/lucky they fix it meanwhile. ( but anyway it dont matter now then it work for you now. )
