Scammers gain access to accounts through a fake Valve moderator.
Don't believe anyone who says something like a user with the same nickname and avatar stole your belongings and "accidentally reported the wrong person." scammers will get acces to your account

I found myself in a similar situation. Someone wrote to me that a user with the same nickname and avatar stole a knife from him and he report to the wrong person. He wrote for a long time that I could be banned and give a discord like a Valve moderator. His username was "steamvalve_official", so I believed him. But don't believe everything he says. He said to send my purchase history to find out my login and he said that my account would be blocked, etc. After I was very scared, I simply followed his instructions and I was scammed. DO NOT SAY LOGIN, PASSWORDS, OR CODE FROM SMS, AS MODERATORS DO NOT NEED THIS. THEY HAVE IT. Even if you get caught, you are obliged to go to Steam support and write a full description, like I was scammed and my email was deleted, my phone number is Steam Guard. ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR FIRST ADDRESS. IMMEDIATELY BLOCK YOUR ACCOUNT THROUGH STEAM SUPPORT AND DON'T LOSE THE RECOVERY CODE. FIND RECEIPTS OR THE CARD NUMBER YOU USED TO REFILL YOUR STEAM BALANCE, AS THIS IS PROOF OF ACCOUNT OWNERSHIP. Never reveal or disclose information that could allow a scammer to gain full access to your account.

Very old scam, well known, and incredibly obvious. You would have to be blind not to see the scam which has been around for numerous of years.

The people who you’re trying to warn don’t read the forums for such things until it’s too late

So common that Valve even has a whole support page about the scam.

https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/3195-9FFB-BA06-F25B

Valve will never message you on the forums, Steam chat, Discord or anywhere else.

They will not add you as a friend.

The ONLY point of contact is Support tickets here.

I just want to help those who find themselves in my place.

As I said, the people who are likely to fall for such scams won't be reading this unfortunately. They don't come to the forums until it's too late (much like yourself just now). The regulars here are all very much aware of these dead obvious scams.

It was very nice of you to try and warn people though.

Indeed! OP had good intentions, after all.
lol, yeah, it should be basic knowledge that anyone contacting you online is a scammer. If they are trying to evoke an emotion, you know 100% they are trying to get you to act without thinking.

Never trust anyone online until you can trust them. Assume the worst, until proven otherwise and never lose skepticism.

I taught this to my daughter every year since she was 5 years old. Just have to keep hammering it home, so if you have kids, dear reader, remind them often.
