Revoke approval to steam settings on child account
I’m setting up a steam deck for a child in my family. I was logged in as him and couldn’t change some settings in the steam menu. I requested approval to change the settings and then logged into my own account and approved it. Now I can’t revoke the approval. If I log into my account and go to Family Management, I can click on “Requests” and see that the child’s account requested “access to steam settings” and that my account approved it. There is no option to revoke the access. I would like to do so. Any help would be appreciated.

go to Steam > Settings > Family and click Manage under the Family Library Sharing section. From there you can click *Revoke* next to the childs acc or manage the settings in the Family View window to remove their access to specific features or games
Thank you, Mitochondria, but the Steam client has changed. These are the options now:
Steam Client > Settings > Family > Manage your Steam Family (this opens a web page with my account and it opens to the Family Management section) > there are 5 tabs:
1.)Manage: here I can enable or disable parental controls, revoke access to games and allow or disallow access to
-steam store
-community content
-their online profile,screenshots and achievements
- friends chat and groups
Toggling these options does not revoke the approval I granted to view/change my child’s steam settings
2.)Library: this is my family sharing library
3.)Requests; this where I can see I approved the request for my child to change his steam settings. There isn’t an option to revoke it here.
4.)Playtime: here I can see my child’s play time
5.)History: here I can see the history of changes to my child’s parental controls.

I dont see an option for revoking the approval I granted. Ugh.
I’ve made some progress on this. First, I now understand that child accounts can’t change most steam deck settings by default and have to request access from adults in their families. When they request access to one setting and an adult approves it, the child account gets access to change all steam deck settings. Prior to digging into this, I assumed the child would only get access to the specific setting they had clicked to make the request. I was trying to figure out which setting I had approved, and now realize that it’s an all or nothing approval.

Second, it appears there’s a bug in the approval/denial notifications. When a child requests approval to alter steam deck settings, an adult has the opportunity to approve it for 1 hour, 4 hours, 24 hours or permanently. I must have approved the request for only a certain amount of time and that time period must have expired because the child’s account currently can’t change most steam deck settings. The bug is that even though the approval time period has expired, every time the child logs in or turns on the steam deck, a notification pops up that I have approved access to steam settings. Before understanding that approval was all or nothing, I assumed that there was only one setting that the child had access to, so I was looking for how to figure out which one the child had access to and how to revoke that setting. The same thing happens for requests denials.

Making another request does not stop the recurring notifications about the approval or denial of previous requests whenever the child account turns on the steam deck while the new request is still pending.

Valve, please fix this bug!

🔍 Why You Can’t Revoke Approval

Once you approve a request to change settings, Steam generally doesn’t allow you to immediately undo or revoke that approval from the Family Management page. It’s a bit counterintuitive, but that seems to be how the system currently works. The approval grants the child temporary access to modify the settings, but the controls are limited when it comes to revocation.

✅ Steps to Revoke Access

While Steam doesn’t provide a direct “revoke” button in the Requests section, here are some workarounds to reset or revoke that access:

1. Turn Off Family View

You can turn off Family View entirely, which will reset the child account’s permissions, including access to settings:

Go to Steam Settings on your parent account.

Navigate to Family > Family View.

If Family View is currently enabled, you can disable it. This will automatically remove all custom permissions you’ve set for the child account.

Once Family View is off, the child account will not be restricted by the parental settings.

2. Change the Child's Permissions in Family Settings

You can adjust the permissions manually in the Family Management area. Follow these steps:

Go to Steam Settings on your parent account.

In the Family section, click Manage Family Settings.

Find the child account and look for the permission options.

Disable or adjust permissions for settings like store access, game access, or specific Steam features.

You can set the child account back to restricted mode if necessary, which limits what they can do in the settings.

3. Remove the Child Account from the Family Group (Last Resort)

If the above options don't work and you're still unable to revoke the approval, you can remove the child account from the family group entirely and then re-add them with different permissions:

Go to Steam Settings on your parent account.

Navigate to Family > Manage Family Group.

Click on the child’s account and remove them from the group.

After removing the account, re-add the child with the desired permissions.

❗ Additional Tips

Make sure you're logged in as the parent account to adjust permissions for the child. The child account can't modify the Family View settings or revoke permissions on its own.

If you're still seeing issues or unusual behavior, try restarting the Steam client or logging out and back in to make sure the changes take effect.
