I asked the same question a few days ago. Most people recommended the classic HL1 version.

Here's the thread: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3013224

Personally I like the original way more than the source version. Something about the source engine made the game not feel right, don't remember what it was exacty since I haven't played the source version in ages but I think part of it was the physics which just didn't work well with half-life's mechanics. Also stuff like having crystal clear water and HD lighting with really low rez graphics just felt really jarring; like if you set up the settings incorrectly. Then again I don't know if you need to buy a game that uses the source engine or not to play black mesa source which I also recommend which if that's the case half-life source might be the better option. Funny thing, even though black mesa is great it still has some parts which are downright unfair because of the physics engine since the original half-life had way more precise platforming sections than half-life 2. Of course this is all assuming they haven't patched it since then.

Valve Complete Pack(That does include the games of The Orange Box) and Black Mesa Source. Entertainment for at least a decade (HL2 just won game of the decade on some tiny awards show somewhere so you know it has to be quality)

Wait for the christmas sale and buy the half life complete pack when it's 75% off.

The problem with buying that is that it is hard to gauge if Valve will put that up for $24.99/75% off. If they don't, it would be cheaper to grab the various pieces (HL Complete and/or OB, CS Complete, L4D bundle, etc.) when they each reach that deeper 75% discount. At least Black Mesa is free though, and you don't need to buy a source game to play it (just download the SDK from the tools menu).

Go Half -Flife Orig. The Source build while graphically better is more or less plagued by bugs and glitches. SOrta why they never bothered to apply source to OF or BS.
