steam won't open unless i restart my computer
a few days ago steam wouldnt open so i followed advice to delete everything except steam exe and steamapps.

that did nothing. so i restarted my computer and it worked, and i think deleting those files did nothing, because now steam only opens after my computer is restarted.

as you all know windows 8/8.1/10 dont fully shutdown your computer to give you faster boot time; restart is the only way. so i think this has something to do with it. (im on w10pro64)

so just to make myself clear: i turn on my computer, steam won't open (tried ending in taskmanager and opening again doesnt work), so i restart my computer and then it opens fine.

does anyone have any advice other than reinstalling steam? or maybe a way to reinstall without losing games? cause ive got mods, saves etc that i cba to reinstall. thanks everyone, i really appreciate your advice! :)

Turn Fast Startup off:

http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4189-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-10-a.html

Seriously, turn it off. I had to turn it off on my machine when I upgraded to Win 8 as my keyboard and mouse wouldn't work after a Fast Restart - crappy Logitech drivers probably.

i don't want to turn it off because it makes my computer boot faster. i know it'll probably fix it but i don't want a workaround, i want a fix.

ive got a wireless logitech keyboard and mouse and it made its own volume thing when i press the volume keys, so it must have some software, maybe thats causing it? although i doubt it cause its worked all this time, but ive just uninstalled it cause i never needed it anyway.

thanks for your help :)

Unfortunately, turning Fast Startup off probably is the only fix. You could try asking the posters in the Hardware and OS forum though as their technical knowledge is far superior to mine.

There's one thing you could try first though. If you're using the beta client then opt out of it and see if that makes any difference - it probably won't but you never know what new 'quirks' the beta has.

This is what is happening to me as well. was there ever a resolution?
not for me no. if steam crashes or fails to start at boot, i need to restart my whole pc just to get steam to work again. :alert:

How much faster?
I didnt see much of a difference, maybe it felt like a second. And it was the first i disabled for various reasons.

You have to boot twice, because maybe your "fast booting" is causing problems. So its at least double slow. Not fast.

I figured it out. all you need to do is go into services, look for steam client service, right click it, click restart, then right click it again and click start.

Try making a new short cut maybe?
just give it time. have you tried that?? i was having this issue and found that patients paid off :) does take some time but eh see if it works

I'm having this same problem - I find a particular game on Steam won't start, just sitting on a black screen (specifically, TES4: Oblivion) and when I try to restart Steam, it just checks for updates then does nothing. (In Task Manager, Steam.exe is running, but it's sitting at about 4MB memory usage and not changing.) The only remedy I've found is a full system reboot, and then the game works again. (I have already disabled Fast Start and done that thing with the Steam client service.) I'm on Win10 x64.

EDIT: Okay, I'm about to try #2 and #3 in this link. Figured I'd post the link here as at least there's a few solutions that could be helpful to people experiencing this issue. https://appuals.com/fix-steam-game-wont-launch-windows-10/

Exactly the same with me. Happens a lot... and I mean A LOT. The only answer I can find after a long google search is "turn off fast boot", which I already don't have on. I completely disabled hibernation (which needs to be on in order for fast boot to even be available), so it can't be that. I kill the steam.exe in Task Manager and anything related to steam and the last game I ran (if applicable), but to no avail. I just get the "Updating Steam" thing briefly followed by a big fat nothing. A clean boot is the only solution I have currently.... oh and I have to cut the power too, because every time this happens with Steam and I then try to either Shutdown or Restart, my PC gets stuck on the "Restarting" or "Shutting Down" screen indefinitely. And these two things are mutually inclusive, as neither thing ever happens without the other.

I'm not sure what I did, but the problem seems to have gone away. (I haven't played Oblivion or Skyrim much in a while, but I'll probably post here again if the problem comes back.)
