Can't create new path to download games to.
I have tried searching for help, and have followed the following guide: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4BD4-4528-6B2E-8327
but I don't seem to be able to create a new folder to download my files into.

When I click the + to add a new drive it takes me into Windows File explorer. I select the new destination, and while it has created a steamapps folder in there I am unable to select it as a destination to move or install games.

I've watched numerous videos where Fie Explorer does not seem to open to select the folder when initially adding the drive and there is an actual Steam Client box to select the drive to add, this does not occur for me.

Any help or insight into something obvious I am overlooking would be much appreciated,

The client only allows one library folder per drive.

Hmm, don't know why you weren't getting Steam's 'Add new Steam library folder' popup... if you had it might be telling you what went wrong.

Anyway, try things manually ;)

1. Create the library folder e.g. C:/Games/SteamGames (in your case OP it's already created)

2. Run steam://open/console (press Windows key + R, paste in: steam://open/console, choose OK)

Should open Steam on the Console tab.

3. In the bar at the bottom, type library_folder_add then the path to the library folder e.g.
library_folder_add "C:/Games/SteamGames"

Press ENTER and its done.

The console window should mention 'Mounted path ', the library folder path and its index e.g.
Mounted path "C:/Games/SteamGames" : index 6

I had the same problem with the pop-up not showing up. It happened when I was trying to download the TTW Fallout mod. But luckily, the manual method did the trick. Thanks Garoo!

Afaik stay away from "Games" folder that was DOS location in the past, and windows hardcode that folder with more admin rights as old games once had, could also give you issue with it.

its 2 decades ago, i read somewhere that MS harcode into windows, and im not sure they have removed it ever, gl dig info out at what MS once did or stop doing it. also part of the 8.3 issue with such games. ( here we are 20 years later, and noone can remmeber them old things anymore ) also patch game issue, and that why you should stay out of that area.' Unless you actual do try run a DOS game" through DOS box or other way

this was so helpful I dont know why I didnt think about trying the manual approach. Youre amazing! worked like a charm and now i can see and use my external drive. I hope more people come across this post despite being almost a year old. It took me 20 minutes to stumble on it while i was genuinely stumped.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
