Brand new to steam, looking for essential first games for PC!
Hi guys, I'm definitely new to this and really wouldn't mind some advice on some first games for my PC? :) i've went to "can you run it" and typed in games such as "the witcher 2" and "crysis 2" and my PC can run them at high settings with a decent framerate, mind you, games like borderlands 2 require a lot more from my graphics card!! D: so yeah, good games please but nothing too power heavy, im a massive fan of horror, adventure, shooters, anything with a great storyline and replayability is a must :) thank you!

Torchlight 2 is a great game with a good length it took me around 20hours to beat the game on my first playthrough and then theres new game+ and theres 4 diffrent classes with multible diffrent build styles so replayablity isnt a issue here

other games i reccomend are xcom enemy unknown Fallout 3/new vegas Deus ex goty and human revolution and lastly the binding of isaac.

Oh yeah. And if you're interested send me a friend request and I can give you The Orange Box (HL2, HL2 Lost Coast, HL2 Ep1, HL2 Ep2, Portal 1 and TF2[premium so you get certain advantages over F2P players]) and Day of Defeat. And a Dota 2 invite.

BTW: I'm leaving for work soon so send me the request but I might not get around to giving those things to you until later tonight or tomorrow.

Basically all the games in the Valve Complete Pack. Only problem is I'm not sure if they plan to put that back on sale for $25/75% off for the Winter Sale. If they don't, you can pick up CS Complete, Day of Defeat:S, the Orange Box, HL Anthology, HL2: DM Source, L4D2 (original L4D is redundant with original maps being added to the sequel), and Portal 2 for a total of $29.93 if you wait for their respective and inevitable 75% off sales. You could also tack on HL:S for $2.49 but I don't think that's necessary since it's not all that different from the original HL. Dota 2 was supposed to go F2P this month- not sure if they've pushed that back or not.

Given your preferences, I'd start with Amnesia. It's inexpensive, will work on your PC and it's really very good. If Borderlands 2 is too heavy for your machine, there's always Borderlands 1. It's really not very different in terms of appearance and gameplay, and in some ways it's even the better game (I dig BL2, however!).

Ricochet -- it's the only game I can honestly say that everyone needs to own.

As to other suggestions in terms of story and replayability; Bastion, The Elder Scrolls series, and Penumbra.

Bundles are always a cheap way to extend your library.

The Deus Ex games are fun shooters with a good story, and the Witcher games are also fantastic RPG's that you can get DRM-free backup copies of from GOG.com, which is run by the developers, CD Projekt Red. Elder Scrolls & Fallout games aren't too bad either.

Just to emphasize once more- wait for the Winter Sale to begin Dec 20 before buying anything- you'll find the best deals then. Steam's two best sales every year are the Summer Sale (June or July) and Winter Sale (Christmas/New Year's). They usually don't have a big sale in the spring (aka the "spring drought") Some tips for these sales:

1.) Never buy anything until the last day (Jan 4) unless it's featured as a flash or daily sale, or if it's already 75% off. You can check the forums to see if a game you wanted was already featured as a flash/daily.

2.) Put together a wishlist and/or establish a budget to limit impulse buys. Only buy games you know you'll get a chance to play within the next 5-6 months- before the next sale begins when they'll be even cheaper.

3.) Check the price history charts at http://www.steamgamesales.com. If a game was once 75% off, odds are it will be again. You can access the charts for any game by copying the "/app/#####" or "/sub/#####" string in the game's Steam store page URL and adding it to the end of steamgamesales.com. Note: This feature seems to be broken right now, but it should be fixed soon.

I'm not sure if you're into indie games or not, but if you are, the number of bundles out there seems to be quickly multiplying, and they are indeed a cheap, quick way to build up your library with some decent titles. Just make sure they offer Steam keys for the games. You can lookup[en.wikipedia.org] all the games once offered in the Humble Bundles, because even though expired bundles can't be bought, they usually offer the best indies at the time that are also available through Steam and are compatible with all 3 OS's (Windows/Mac/Linux). HIB V in particular was great.

TLDR version: Deus Ex, Witcher, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout series. Get all of them during the upcoming winter sale, but take steps to guard your wallet from other games. Also check out Humble Bundle for something different.

Wait for xmas sale. Games I recommend that are very cheap: portal, terrarria, civilization iv, Borderlands 1, Dungeons of Dredmor.
