Do people actually point farm?

I always see when people have just absurdly bad takes, people claim they're point farming.

Maybe I'm out of touch because of the size of my account, but do people actually "point farm"?

My account is sitting on 1.5M "points", and I remember the days before the points even existed. I just don't see any possible reason why I'd ever need more.

And those that don't have this volume of points, the only stuff I've ever bought in the "points shop" has been a few thousand here, or a few thousand there. It's not expensive. Not even remotely close. A ton of stuff is actually under a thousand.

Now I get that probably 90% of the times when people claim someone is "just points farming" they're just coping because they can't believe someone was so unintelligent to make the post they did, but are there any scenarios where people actually are "points farming"? Why? Is it literally just "number go up?"

Personally I point farm because steam doesn't accept 'asking for points' - Steam themselves has made this jester point farming system. I would give them the jester award :CatLaughing: Many things they are doing right, this is not one of them.

But like why do you point farm?

Is there stuff you want to buy in the point shop that you don't have points for?
Is it just "points number go up?"
Or is it trying to buy every single item in the point shop even if it doesn't actually interest you?

No, its just because I am going to buy with 200000 everything I could possibly want. I am not saving it.

I mean why not just buy what you want, and ignore points after that. Why some specific number. Does it actually matter if its 0 or 100k after you've bought all you want? Not like they can be used for anything else.

Have some points I guess.

Perhaps, but really... I dunno. I tend to forget this whole "Point System" exists on regular basis.

I just have no understanding for aesthetics whatsoever. Some random unlockable pictures seem to have very little practical use.
How much time I'm actually gonna spend playing video games instead anyway?

It's a customer loyalty program.
Such programs are designed to encourage customers to shop at the same store or online shop.

You receive a free gift or something similar, so you return to the same store because you want to collect all the items or something. That's something kids usually want and makes them return to the same store.

Freebie clip-art, like with Microsoft Word but on Steam instead. I can understand you don't have anything with it, but it is what it is.

The sad part is 99% of users probably dont even use points, and i bet the less than 1% that do dont use them right when it comes to awards

I like to give awards when they are deserved so I tend to never have many points. Example being if i use a guide for achievments or something ill give one of the Michelangelo or Extra helpful awards

Problem is Idk when id use most awards

But real talk. The only point farming people should do is making guides or stuff for the steam workshop or artwork that people LOVE. But sadly that takes talent. and people would rather ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ than try to do somthing cool.

No its not. Loyalty programs exist to drive sales, and specifically to drive repeat sales.

If this points program was usable on getting discounts to buy more games (like greenmangaming did for a while, or how humblebundle gives you a bigger discount for having humble monthly for longer), then it'd be a loyalty program.

The fact that apparently a large portion of users get the majority of their points from things other than purchases further reinforces this is not a loyalty program.

Also your analogy of a collectible is not a loyalty program. GWP/Gift-With-Purchase programs are distinct from loyalty programs. It's also definitely the better analogy to steam points than a loyalty program.

I don't do it. I don't know anyone who does it. But such people inevitably exist. And why not? No point farmer ruined my day yet.
