Why do People try to Farm Steam Points?
Is there some kind of value to them that I am missing? I see people post stuff trying to farm jester awards etc and I feel like there is a use for steam points I don't know about

wdym? steam points give you animated backgrounds, mini backgrounds, profile avatars, custom profiles

... and, then, the possibility to sell them through a myriad of sketchy third-party sites to people who believe these "animated backgrounds, mini backgrounds, profile avatars, custom profiles" are in fact worth something.
Well, you can get 4000xp for 40000 points during Summer and Winter sale purchasing the seasonal badges so that's 80000 point dump to pour them on every year.

You however missed to clarify what the value to that is that OP is missing...

OP asked why people farm points and I pointed the biggest infinite point sink there is. Some people see value in raising their level. Most people don't spend 800$ to gain the points from their purchases so if they want the full badges every year, they must find alternate way.

Because they want their profile to look much nicer.

The moment there's a number, someone will treat it as a score. Steam "friends", VAC bans, you name it.

Yet not the point of said point sink...

Yes, don't get me wrong, all fine, but as to the manner in which points (well, rewards) have destroyed this "community" through the incessant, organized trolling and baiting I'm sticking with the financial incentive as pointed out in #1.

The answer is for the reason anyone invests in their appearance. They believe that a triple digit steam level and an expansive profile. Will make friends and strangers alike think more highly of them, and yeah to a certain extent this kind of thing does work on others. Just like fancy jewelry, the latest smartphone, that expansive sports car, those overpriced clothes. Yeah people like to have nice looking things. That aren't exactly justified by necessity.

And then there's the trolls & clickbaiters who would be acting like that regardless, but now they have a handy "score" counter in Jesters. More jesters = more proof that they're winning.

The points have no monetary value.
Those who seem to think they do are misinformed.
They are for buying non-tradable and non-sellable cosmetic items only.

Yes they do: follow the link in #1 and note the many sketchy third-party sites selling (!) Steam points.

Steam being Steam (and you being you even more specifically) I am very sure you will again find a way to not get the point, and I thank you for your contribution as such. Reminded me again that I really do not want to be here. Cheers.
Seasonal badge would be one thing. And perhaps XP on the Community Contributor badge - which both translate as Steam levels, which, in-turn, translates as better Trading Card drop rates.

Don't forget SteamLadder or other sites. As always, this is also a competition, just like the level badge.

People who spend tons of money on their profiles attract the strangest individuals in the comment sections.
