UK — No credit card
I don’t have a credit card and I don’t need or want one. Like many in the UK, we prefer to purchase goods and services with a debit card. Without a Credit card, how can I continue to use Steam in all its glory?

By getting a credit card.

Is that really the only option?

Yikes. I don’t even have a local bank anymore. I have three different bank accounts and all of their branches have closed. I’ll have to google where my ‘local’ branch is.
Unless they’ll allow me to apply online?

Just buy games from authorised third party key resellers such as Humble, Fanatical, IndieGale, GMG, WinGameStore etc, Steam won't get any money and eventually they'll take the hint and implement a better way of enforcing the draconian OSA rules.

The Ofcom requirements are:

1) Age assurance methods – which include age verification, age estimation or a combination of both – must be ‘highly effective’ at correctly determining whether a particular user is a child.

2) They include: open banking, photo ID matching, facial age estimation, mobile network operator age checks, credit card checks, digital identity services and email-based age estimation;

Valve went with the credit card option because they already have the payment processing in place.

While I hate this getting a Credit card does have to = you get in debt. Just pay it off and you won't get any interest.

I have mine on my Google Wallet and leave the card at home. Every time I do a Contact payment using Google Wallet it goes my Credit Card. I use it for food, fuel and anything else. I then pay it off the moment I'm back at home so never had to pay interest.

You also get better protection when using a credit card compared to a Debit card
I think as you voice and wait they likely put more options in
I think they got a lot to deal with now in a short time may take a time

Honestly I doubtr they will. Me thinks Vlave more than anyone knows how many Steam UK users on the platform use credit cards and i wager it's more than half.

Alternatively, Valve blocks age restricted accounts from redeeming keys for adult games. After all you have to be logged in, and Valve will know what the key is for.

After all, I don't think your five second plan fixed the lack of age verification options for Germany. So what's plan B?

Product key activation of games restricted in Germany works fine in Germany. However, you might be unable to access the store page and/or community hub.

only 65% of UK owned a credit card in 2024 and i'm not a fan of being punished for being financially stable and not requiring a credit account at 31 years old, i'm personally not that interested in the "Adult Only" section but i don't like being restricted for being financially responsible

i would happily hand over my drivers license or passport before a credit card

Same, I have reached the ripe old age of 38 without the need or want of a Credit Card and have got on just fine and dandy, now just to purchase a few games it becomes an essential. The Gov rushed this through and passed it onto the Tech companies and essentially said "you sort it out".

I contacted my local MP explaining the way each website/company has different methods and are alienating people for not wanting to use a Credit Card. I suggest you do something similar.
