For the store, all checkboxes should be blank boxes, unchecked...
https://store.steampowered.com/account/preferences
If they are blue with little white checkmarks, you are opting into seeing mature content.
Are you saying you can not turn them off without entering your CC?
The default is off.
You'd think as a software engineer I'd know how check boxes work ... oh, hold on, I do ;)
Yep, that's what I thought as well.
Without CC details the preferences available are ...
- General Mature Content
- Frequent Violence or Gore
- Some Nudity or Sexual Content
Add my CC details the list is now ...
- General Mature Content
- Frequent Violence or Gore
- Some Nudity or Sexual Content
+ Frequent Nudity or Sexual Content
+ Adult Only Sexual Content
It gets better, I'd provided my CC details so they could verify my age, after which I deleted the details, guess what happened next ... they want me to enter my CC details to prove my age.
Seems like common sense is not a prerequisite for Steam employees!
And like I last stated, they are off by default. Are you saying they were ON even without CC details?
And yes, removing your CC (not having it saved) will restrict you again. This is intentional by design..
Hmm, if the default is off, then why does Steam keep on adding sexual content type games to my discovery queue ... I see a slight fault in your logic!
My discovery queue has one of these games listed, F knows why as I've never and will never show any interest in these sorts of games, but it now prevents me from traversing my discovery queue!
The whole point of the Brit age-check system is that unless you pass the age check, none of those things should be showing in the first place.
Are you seeing actual "adult"/porn games, or are you seeing regular games that happen to have Sexual Content (like, say, Cyberpunk)
Ooooookay, so I've proved that I am of age ...
Do I need to keep on proving I'm of age every single time?
Does it make sense that I can only screen out sexual content games if I prove I'm of an age where I could actually buy them?
Is it not possible for Steam to make a note that I've proved my age by providing CC details without having to store my CC details?
Did anyone at Steam actually do any testing of this feature before release? ... Oh, did I mention I was a Senior Test Engineer as well before I retired!
Having the CC saved as the payment method ensures the account is verified and not just sold off to underage people on a 3rd party site.

If I hadn't verified my age and by default 'Sexual Content' is turned off, then why has my discovery queue shown sexual content games?
Just to be clear, I am referring to PORN type games, which Steam refers to as 'Adult Only Sexual Content'. Maybe change the wording used for the last three preferences so they don't all use the wording 'Sexual Content'
Anyway, I'm done explaining, I've pointed out that Steam has incorrectly implemented this feature, and should therefore get it sorted as quickly as possibly ... maybe even test it!
And no kid has ever used their parents credit card to pay for a game ... oh, hold on!!!
Yet again, another law implemented by governments and companies obeying the law, with no actual thought going into the process.
My apologies if I'm coming across as aggressive, I don't mean to be, but it's a very simple thing I've pointed out and I've just wasted nearly an hour of my life trying to explain it!
I mean you have to blame the government, steam has to obey the law and has no choice, even if the law is stupid
