Not to mention Counter Strike was released as a mod for Half-life in 1999

Grand Theft Auto 1 released in 1997.

Valve made hl1 (the Addons did someone else), hl2, most of the other stuff is based on mods (CS, tf2, Dota) or made by third party developers (hl 1 Addons, left 4 dead)....

Goldeneye 64? There are plenty of video games where you shoot people with a guns that were out long before the Counter-Strike developers made a mod of Quake, a game where you shoot people with guns.

Bingo. I like modders more than IP holders.

Call me crazy, but.... Quake, Unreal... Long before the mod to Half Life existed. Call of Duty was inspired by other WWII shooters, Medal of Honor and Wolfenstein.

What made Counter Strike popular, was the zero cost to get into it, and quick matches.
