Is still steam the best platform for games?
If I were to pick: For most gamers, Steam is still one of the best balanced choices: solid features, large library, good support. But if your priorities are specific (e.g. no DRM, paying less, subscriptions instead of buying, or strong Linux support), then Steam might not be the best.

Correct.
In this day and age likely not. There are so many ways to access games, and the ease of consoles, handhelds and even today stream services are just way more inexpensive then the price of gaming pc's and the price to keep up on them.

Games themselves are altogether more expensive, and so Steam not the bargain it used to be.

Steam however continues to be the mother milk for small developers that get chances with Early Access and other means to put out what can be great games on all platforms.

And for that, Steam continues to be an important platform for the gaming community as a whole.
