Eye Of The Temple Idol puzzels

I am unable to negotiate the idol with the stone eye, I just keep going around and around, I read that you need to close the gate at the far end to slow it down and I can get to the second one but end up not having enough time to close it to slow the stone down. Can someone tell me how to do this?
