Steam backup crashes client
Been fighting this all afternoon; downloading games works, but restoring from a backup does not work at all the progress bar is stuck on Restoring and never progresses...and after a few minutes the steam client crashes completely. Anyone know a fix or I am I SOL with using the steam restore backup feature?

If this is about a certain game, you need to ask in that game hub.

No; this is ANY game backup. I have tried 7 games so far; each with the exact same result.

I am having the same problem. Even backups that worked before such as my October 2024 Cyberpunk backup are no longer working when I wanted to restore it back to my secondary system. Same behavior as you, it starts the restore process, gets stuck and steam crashes in a couple of minutes.

The only workaround I found was to copy the backup file to an internal drive on this specific pc and then restore from there instead of from the external USB 3.0 drive.

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried it but it still didn't work. I am going to have to try backing up again and seeing if it works.

I've been having the same issue for few days now, I tried deleting and backing up again but it still crashes. I did try restoring, uninstalling the corrupted installed files and restoring again over and over until it eventually installed the game I wanted wanted, but it's totally random and has a frustrating process so I hope they fix this whatever bug cause I restore games a LOT and this has caused problems for me

Under steam settings>interface uncheck "scale text and icons to match monitor settings."

I just tested with a backup I made of marvel rivals and was able to restore the backup once this setting was disabled on Windows 11.

Edit- seems larger games may still crash steam? As a backup of Baldur's Gate 3 still crashes steam and then it just starts downloading the game upon re-opening.
