Or maybe its because I am the pirate?
The trick of getting rid of multiple ships is to have even more guns...
It's much harder too achieve this then just activate the scanner and battle through a long queue of small boarding teams.
To win ship battles need a propper loadout on all weapons, decent shields, enough crew to repair damage and manual aiming and fire control. It also may need jumping out of the system and returning after doing some damage control.
IMHO, both, ship combat and crew combat, are very satisfying, but melee combat is much easier to be successful.
It is ditance i think it they are more than 3 big tiles away they go for your airlock, if they are 3 or less, they go for their own. (I think they calculate how much air they have, might be 4 not 3:D)
Also for the Original Poster. Did you consider....NOT MANNING THE PD?:D Because that is the easiest solution, or you know you can just...toy with the guy manning the station manually:) Enlist, move away, deenlist...:D the shuttle docks, your crew kills em now PD-s can work again:)
