Despite originating from a parody of tabletop rpgs this game's combat is deceptively unforgiving, more so in the early acts and the DLCs. Consequently the difficulty ramps are somewhat inconsistent. Critical failures extending to buffs and (to a lesser extent) healing on a fixed RNG seed (thank devs for seed retention being optional) on anything above normal difficulty can turn the tides instantaneously. I don't feel like the randomia gauge does enough to mitigate that.

Now to speak of some of the positives the enemy behaviour is smart and will prioritise threats on the fly. Expect to be peppered with debuffs, status effects and coordinated focus on the weak links. Also the delay turn feature (looking at you 5e, sigh) is a great addition. The game supports mid-combat saves so experimenting is not a hassle. Once you do get a hang of it and things go according to plan you will effortlessly route almost the entirety of opposing forces within 2 or 3 rounds. But thankfully the endgame and the DLCs will put a stop to that, so the challenge remains.

It's one of those games that I like but will not readily recommend to others (might just turn people away from an already niche genre) unless I am certain of their preferences. The plot and the characters are mediocre with comedy being a dominant theme. So if an exceptional story is what you're looking for, search elsewhere. But if you wish for tough, tactical fights with some strategy sprinkled in give it a shot. The game has limited replayability owing to a few choices, biggest being that of additional companion.
P.S. Back to the Futon has been the most enjoyable section of the game for me.
