Life is Strange True Colors will fail miserably (and reasons why).
Reason 1: Lacklustre voice acting

LIS has been about good voice acting and music. One of the reasons why Max was so popular in LIS was because of Hannah Telle. Not just Max, look at Chloe - all credit goes to Ashley Burch. Or Kate Marsh - credit goes to Dayeanne Hutton.

Or even look at Rachel - all credit goes to Kylie Brown. However, the voice actors in True Colors are piss poor. I mean look at this gameplay.

It's a snoozefest. The voice actors are acting as if they are reading a line. If this is the best video they can choose to showcase the game, just imagine how more SNOOZEFEST the rest of the game will be.

Or even look at this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BP8FC4s_zY

Brother and sister meeting each other after 8 years and they seem they're not excited to see each other. That's how bad the voice acting is.

Reason 2: No character build-up

See this video:

In this gameplay you are asked to find the music taste of Gabe (brother of Alex), who you don't even know about. Gabe wasn't even introduced to us properly, so why should we care about Gabe?

That doesn't make any sense.

LIS 1 made us understand those characters first, know their past stories, care for them. But in True Colors, you are now thrown into making guesses for a random stranger.

Conclusion

Mark my words. This game will fail miserably. There's no charm in the gameplay, voice acting, story progression and what not.

What a letdown. What a joke. What a shame.

Miserably, no. It will pull some money on name alone. But will it fall well short of Square's expectations? Almost certainly.

Absolutely agree.

I was preventing myself from watching any gameplay videos or trailers, so that I can enjoy the game blind-sided. But, the preorder price made me do it. And I'm disgusted.

Waste of time, effort and money.

This isn't hyperanalysing. If I had hyperanalysed, then I would have found a lot more issues with the game.

What I pointed out is just the tip of the iceberg, i.e. me casually looking at the trailers and comparing what Deck Nine achieved with Before The Storm.

When you're spending $70 on an Ultimate Edition, you don't just dump your money. You see what you're investing in.

This game will bomb worse than what LIS 2 did and that's saying something.

Most likely it will sell really based on name recognition alone.

True!

LIS still has a good brand image and since Steph, i.e. Katy Benz, is still around from Before The Storm, it might work as a nostalgia factor for some people.
Speak for yourself. Even if it doesn't live up to the previous LiS games, I'll enjoy this game regardless no doubt. I'm sure many others will too.

Mark my words.

Well, if you're going to enjoy True Colors, then that's great. Everyone has different tastes and I respect that.

I am having hopes, though technically, empathy doesn't allow you to read thoughts...just emotions, you have to learn why they feel that emotion, but i guess they are using a special kind of empathy then?

It's not even out yet and I'm sure you haven't seen a lot of it, so why so much hate for a game that hasn't even dropped? From what I've seen, and it's not too much admittedly, it looks perfectly fine. Might end up being the weakest of the series but still a good game in it's own right.

Yes, kind of special. Empathy has various sub-types (you can read about it) and each type has its own advantages. This is a good article to read about the types:

My take is less about hate and more about expectations. And my expectations were high after I saw what Deck Nine did with Before The Storm. They did justice to Chloe. Even if there was no Ashley Burch to back up the voice over for Chloe (instead did by Rhianna DeVries), the version of Chloe we got was close to perfect.

With True Colors, we are getting a lacklustre cast of characters for voice overs (except Katy Benz as Steph). Voice acting is what makes or breaks these games and they focused so less on that single important factor.

I never knew the game's voice acting was so bad, until I saw the gameplay trailers. And frankly, that spoils it entirely for me. I mean look at this Blackwell Reunion:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOCwoPPxq3o

Even after 6 years I can still remember clearly each of those people's voices in my head.

I'm expecting no LIS 1 levels of brilliance, but at least make a good effort. And it looks like all effort was instead gone into making the game look prettier.

You're right though - True Colors might be the weakest entry in the series. And that's why it doesn't bode too well with me, especially when I was so happy to see a new LIS game.

Regardless of it. I think I will enjoy it. Not on PC of course. I just bought it on Xbox Series S and already preloaded. I'm good to go.

The good thing about True Colors that it's not episodic. It was painful to wait in-between episodes, back in the day. Hope you have fun!

it is episodic but all the episodes are released on the same day so you can play them all back to back

It's super weird that you're complaining about a lack of build-up for the character when that literally IS the build-up. Every scene in the first 25 minutes is characterizing Gabe and the characters of Haven Springs. How the flower shop girl confides in him about her relationship, how he's in a somewhat rocky relationship with a long-term partner (buying make up flowers), how that partner has a kid.

The very scene you're criticizing is yet another example of finding out about Gabe through discovering his music taste & getting a glimpse at his close friends/how they feel about him. Your criticism is so hollow because you literally get so much characterization right out of the gate in those first 20 minutes lol. And there's obviously much more to come. Previews peg the 1st chapter of the game alone at ~3 hours.

This would be like playing LiS 1 and saying "Why am I getting Warren's flash drive when I don't even know the character???" Yeah, doing that is part of getting to know him in the first place.
