Interlude Patch: Flip The Script

Welcome back, Scribes! It's time for a flippin' new spell!

This update includes Unfold: a new Movement Spell, New Maps, A Tutorial Kit adjustment, and some light fixes!

We also shout out the new Community Mod Library - hardworking Scribes making their mark on the game! Check out the highlights below and keep an eye on the Roadmap in Vellum's main menu as we go.

New Movement Spell - Unfold

Mental gymnastics? Watch this!

Keep an eye on your foes as you soar backwards through the air with Unfold!

This acrobatic Movement Spell flings you out of danger, granting a brief moment of invulnerability, and offers many pages to build more style into your aerial feats!

Drop deadly mines, craft a winning floor routine, and perform some high-damage trick shots to style on your foes!

New Maps

Roots and shoots and roads...

Venture to fresh combat arenas: Sequoia and Outlook! Fight beneath the tall trees, making use of long-range cover for a forest fight to be remembered.

In Outlook, weave between pillars of an ancient structure - where do these old roads lead? Battle the Torn in a time-worn relic of elsewhere!

Spend Early, Spend Often - Tutorial Spell Changes

Note: This will unlock Callback for all Scribes, while re-locking Swoop!

We're making some initial changes to the new player experience with adjustments to the Tutorial Chapter!

The order of some elements has changed to give Scribes more time to understand the Signature Ink choice they make. Additionally, we're making Callback the new default Spender Spell!

This gives new Scribes a more versatile starting spell set to take into their first Of Scribes and Torn run - Callback's area damage capabilities are a smoother compliment to Jot!

Interlude Patch: Flip The Script - Full Patch Notes

Movement Spell: Unfold

- Unfold: Acrobatically flip backwards, becoming Impervious for 0.3s.

- New Pages of Power are available for Unfold

- A new race and tower jump sequence can be found in the Illuminated Library

New Combat Arenas

- Sequoia and Outlook are now available in Tomes!

General

- Re-ordered the hierarchy of Signature Status effects on enemy health bars (Outline > Blot > Leech)

- Status and Augment effect calculation orders have been re-prioritized (this will result in slightly more damage intake through overlapping damage-reduction effects and an increase in specific damage-amp combinations)

- Re-ordered some Tutorial Chapter elements

- Tutorial Chapter now has Scribes start with Callback instead of Swoop (Note: this will unlock Callback for all Scribes and lock Swoop)

- Adjusted default Camera sensitivity settings and ratios for vertical vs horizontal

- Fixed an error in Credits screen

- Vignette: A Forgotten Grotto correctly offers a tradeoff page by default

- Added a notification for Vignette rewards when there are no more pages to grant

- Fixed an issue with Page of Power: Father of Quill

- Page of Power: Spotless Floor is available again, with a new design - now adds +5 Base Damage to all instances of damage

- Page of Power: Overgrowth - Now increases Base Damage dealt based on amount of mana spent. (Note: will scale better in late game.)

- New Page of Power: The Main Drain - 25% of damage you deal is also done to your Target if they are tethered.

- New Page of Power: Draining Force II - Draining Force always deals damage equal to 100% of your current health to tethered foes.

- New Page of Power: Ode to the West Wind - Foil slashes send out Wind Blades that deal 20 Damage and generate a small amount of mana.

- Spell: Draw - Base Damage reduced from 15 to 12.

- Spell: Draw - Cooldown increased from 0.85s to 0.9s.

- Spell: Foil - First Slash Damage increased from 15 to 20.

- Spell: Foil - Final Slash Damage increased from 25 to 35.

- Spell: Foil - Mana Generation increased by 25%.

- Spell: Jot - Cooldown decreased from 0.5s to 0.45s.

- Spell: Manifest - Base Damage increased from 10 to 12.

- Vignette: Thesis, a Ship Rewritten has received minor adjustments

Give us the white ink and cape that was in preview for 1.0 release.

And a wizard's hat with a brim. Actually, that's all. This game already has little potential, and the fact that it is limited to only one type of robe and retextures/overlays/recolors for it reduces the customization potential to values close to zero.

Endgame Question for RED Ink

I have the issue that I can´t even do the first boss on normal with red ink. I completed all 3 raids on normal with ALL other inks, but still can´t even beat the first one in the first raid with red...?! Sure, I could do it with time, but I don´t want to "waste" 15 minutes just for the FIRST boss. Anyone got some suggestions? I really want those red wings :(...

help verse is beating me with a lead pipe

i swear he is impossible, myriad was tough, but fair, verse just decides you lose. jot seems like practically a guaranteed hit, ive never found a consistent dodge for it, callback has a gargantuan hitbox, shockwave hitbox seems to be random weather or not it lines up with the visual, and he takes so little damage ive yet to see him reach 3/4 of his health. i am on my hands and knees begging for tips on this bastard. for refrence this is my build: red ink, enkindle, spoil, ghostwrite. worked perfect for m...

Ok.. so I went into this game not expecting too much. I was thinking it would be one that I would enjoy for an hour or so and put down, like most other rogue-likes... But man.
I bought it last night, and as of right now have only played for 2.9 hours.
There were SO MANY TIMES I found myself saying out loud 'This game is SO cool!'
It's very much reminiscent of Risk of Rain 2, but with it's own twists.
The abilities? Great! Using ink and the fact that you play as a pen? WTactualF, that's awesome! Progression system is neatly in place. There is SO much already available.
If you have looked at the price tag, and debated, please allow this review to seep into the deep crevices of your mind, and pick up the game. I don't think you'll be very disappointed at all!

The game is very fun and the possibilities keep coming. However, the visual clarity is severely lacking. Also the raids are incredibly interesting, which is counteracted by how POORLY EXPLAINED the fights are. The Plot Device is a prime example, and the reason I've put the game down until further notice. Some raids have indicators that show you SOMETHING and you have to figure out what to do with it. Others just have some text in the top left of the screen giving you vague instructions while you are being swarmed and shot at by range until you either figure it out, die, or give up.
Out side of combat clarity, the game satisfies every itch a rougelite/like enjoyer may have. The game is easy as hell at first, but progression is tied to making it harder yourself in a curse level system, where you add the debuffs that you deal with yourself. The visual and combat clarity leave a lot to be desired, but the game is fun asf 6.5/10 (for now)

Very good learning curve. Feels rewarding to understand game mechanics. Amazing style. Interesting progression system with no micro transaction. Only downside is the absence of wiki. Will most likely sink another 30-40 hours into it this week.

Welcome back, Scribes! With 1.1: Beyond now behind us, we look to new waters - beginning with a fresh new spell!

This update includes Spoil: a new Spender Spell, Visual Intensity Settings, Raid-Specific Spell Tuning, and several bug fixes, minor adjustments! Keep an eye out for some snazzy new Nook Items, too!

New Spender Spell - Spoil

How 'bout them apples?

Brand new to the spellbook, Scribes get to live a fresh, ripe, totally-not-rotten fairytale fantasy with Spoil!

"Offer" your foes a scrumptious bite of a Spoiled Apple and watch as they share their positive reviews with nearby pals! These Apples are tasty, healthy, and only get better with a hefty helping of Pages of Power!

Aim true while flinging bushel after bushel of this sticky, explosive 1-Cost Spender... and find out just how hungry the Torn really are.

Visual Intensity Settings

Details and details and details!

We're introducing Visual Intensity Settings based on your feedback! These new options allow you to further customize your experience for increased performance and legibility both solo and in multiplayer.

In pursuit of these changes, our VFX system has had performance improvements across the board (even without using these new settings!).

Player spells and effects now have a Reduced and Minimal VFX setting.

Enemy abilities and effects now have a Reduced and Minimal VFX setting.

There are a lot of visuals in Vellum - please let us know how your experience with these new settings goes!

Raid-Specific Spell Tuning and Balance

The flexible spellcraft of Scribes is a complex curriculum. Time to teach the Torn Lords a lesson or two.

With the rise of the Torn Lords, we've found (with the help of plenty of feedback!) the disparity between spell damage across the different loadout options in Raids is larger than we'd like!

The lower number of pages available in Raids combined with the Boss/Single-Target heavy encounter profiles, has resulted in some spells falling behind in power/excitement. With Interlude Patch: Spoilers, we're pumping up the damage output of several spells when damaging Raid Bosses only.

Foil, Punctuate, Enkindle, Quip, Blossom, Wordsmith, and Passage will now deal 20 - 66% increased damage to Raid Bosses (details in the patch notes below). Let us know how these feel!

With The Grey Area, The Forgery, and Yonder now complete along with the Early Access journey - we're going to be adjusting our cadence of content! We're incredibly proud of the speed, quality, and quantity of Vellum's Major Chapters and Interlude Patches thus far... especially when we're operating as such a small team (if you're active in the Discord[discord.gg] - you've likely heard from all of us directly by this point!)

Since EA launch, we typically added new content about every two weeks, alternating between Interludes and Major Chapters. Of course, some updates had adjusted timings for major life events and bigger-scope items (especially as the Library Update, Raids, and 1.0 approached).

As a small team, we'll remain incredibly flexible (today's patch includes feedback from this morning - we love this!), but we'll be targeting a few more weeks between updates and more Interludes between Major Chapters. This new pace lets us stay reactive to feedback, continue to chase cool ideas, and gives us more time to plan what comes next!
