And for everyone else: the stat/rewrite update will take longer than I expected to be completed. I initially estimated it at 1 month (which would be coming up on early August), but that's not going to be the case. I don't know yet how much longer it will take so I won't really try to estimate.

The main reason for this is that now that I've had some weeks without the pressure of having to do bigger weekly updates I've been able to think about the game from a longer term and more calm perspective, and I've developed a very solid and definite vision of what I want it to be in the future.

So I've decided that I will keep updating this game for another year or so unconditionally (regardless of how well the updates are received) to execute on this vision. But for me to be able to do that I really need the new codebase to be good and for the rewrite to be done correctly, as the decisions I make now will affect my ability to deliver these updates over this longer period.

As such, the stat/rewrite update will take longer so that I can put some real thought into it and do it safely. This is also the last maintenance update the game will get until the stat/rewrite update, as pretty much all bugs and suggestions people have now are things that will be addressed in that update or in ones that come after.

This is a crude solution and one I don't like, but because people have been affected by performance issues due to these objects it needs a fix. But also because this codebase is going to be thrown away soon, I'm not going to spend too much time trying to optimize it properly. Sorry!


From now on I will also start doing these smaller patches on random days rather than only on Fridays as that will work better for me. There will still be one update a week, but it may come on a Wednesday, or Monday, or whenever.

The next update will feature 20~ new general items that should help with increasing the odds that items presented aren't completely useless because they don't fit the current build, the endless/looping mode which I couldn't fit into this update, as well as a small rework of the conjurer class.


As most of you know, this game was made in 3 months and I didn't really expect it to be played by that many people at all. Once it became clear that a lot of people were enjoying it I decided to start updating it weekly both to fix most immediate problems that could be fixed quickly as well as to assess what kinds of things people liked and didn't like so I could build a plan for bigger updates going forward.

Now that 4 weekly updates have passed, most issues that can be fixed or improved in 1 week bursts have been fixed, and all I'm left with doing is a bunch of stuff that will take a longer amount of time to address. As such, here's my plan going forward:


After next week's update is out, I'll start rewriting the game from scratch and I estimate that this will take 1 month (may take slightly longer). The reason for this is that the game's code was written from the start with the intention of being thrown away, as I didn't expect to have to keep updating it, and so as time passes it will get harder to release updates with the current codebase.

A set of very commonly requested features will be able to be addressed with this update:

• New stat system: the game's current stat system was written in the game's very first week and hasn't been changed since. It is somewhat buggy and inconsistent, and because of this a lot of other features become harder to implement. In the rewrite I plan on creating a new stat system that will be both simpler and more consistent than the current one, and it will also enable:
  
• Post-battle stats: you should be able to see which unit deals the most damage, which one heals the most, which one disables enemies the most, etc. All of this is currently very hard to implement properly and so relies on a redo of the stat system. This also happens to be one of the most requested features so it's at the very top of my list to implement.
  
• Tag system: similar to Path of Exile, everything you hover over in the game should have tags attached to it that tell you what affects what. For instance, Call of the Void would have a DoT tag, and then units like the Witch would also have a DoT tag, and you'd know that Call of the Void affects the Witch without having to guess.
  
• Keyword explanations: similar to most card games, whenever you hover over something it should also be clear what each keyword means. This will generally be achieved by creating additional information windows explaining each keyword. So, if you hover over an Infestor, on top of the window describing the Infestor, a window describing what "critter" means should also pop up.

In general, this update should make the game a lot more consistent and clear, as well as making it easier for me to work with the codebase and release further updates going into the future.


After I release the stat update, I plan on adding a normal roguelite mode to the game. I also estimate that this will take about 1 month (so ~2+ months from now). This will be similar to how Slay the Spire's runs work, where you have a map of nodes and each node is a different type of room. In SNKRX's case, rooms might be arenas, unit or item shops, elite fights, treasure rooms that reward you with units or items, challenges of various types (i.e. move your snake through the labyrinth without hitting the walls), and so on.

On top of the normal roguelite stuff, this update will also be able to address a couple of other commonly requested features:

• Meta-progression: the kind of meta progression I'll have will be one where you simply unlock things and those unlocks add variety to the game. There will never be the kind of meta progression that you see in some games where you need to grind stats to be able to complete the game properly.
  
• More units: since things can be unlocked it makes sense to add more and more units! Unit ideas in general are some of the most common types of threads people create and many people have contributed lots of really cool ideas that I'll use in the future, so this is at the top of my list too.

So these are my plans for the next 2 months or so. There will still be weekly updates going forward but they will be smaller than they have been so far due to the fact that I'll be focusing most of my time on these larger updates. I'll update everyone with progress on the stat update every week from now on and if it's late you'll know in advance.

This update adds a new item levelling system, reworks all items and adds 27 new ones, as well as some rebalancing and lots of bug fixes.


Most items can be now levelled up to Lv.3 in increments of 5 gold per XP:
Lv.1 -> Lv.2 cost: 2 XP = 10 gold
Lv.2 -> Lv.3 cost: 3 XP = 15 gold

Levelling an item up grants it additional stat bonuses. For instance, Amplify: +20/35/50% AoE damage. This means that if you pick up Amplify and spend 25 gold to level it up to Lv.3, all your units will deal 50% increased AoE damage.

• Shooter (white enemy): decreased projectile fire rate and speed, and now its projectiles will be blocked by enemies. Many people have complained that this unit feels unfair, and these changes should add some more counter play possibilities.
  
• Tank (yellow enemy): decreased knockback resistance
  
• Level 25 elite: decreased knockback resistance. This should make the boss bounce back a little after hitting one of your segments, which should decrease the frequency at which it kills multiple segments at once.

Bugs of this nature were the hardest to fix so far and I'm not sure if I got them all. From my tests everything should be working fine now and these exploits shouldn't be available anymore. But if you notice anything weird happening with a run's save states, like the shop being rerolled, passives disappearing (or appearing), units being wrong, etc, please create a thread on the forums. It's best if you have steps to that can reproduce the bug, although that's not necessary.


The next update will feature a rework of healer and psyker classes, as well as possibly the addition of an endless mode to the game. If I don't have enough time to add the endless mode I'll focus on the class reworks + a backlog of QoL features that I haven't been able to get to since release (like the options menu being available from anywhere and not just the arena, as in every normal game in existence...)

This update adds 1 new class, 5 new units, implements a new shop leveling system, a few QoL features and lots of bug fixes.


Added the mercenary class: [expand type=details]Mercenaries (2, 4): +10/20% chance for enemies to drop gold on death[/expand]
Added 5 new mercenary units:[expand type=details]

• Miner (tier 1 mercenary) - picking up gold releases 4 homing projectiles that deal X damage, Lv.3 effect: release 8 homing projectiles instead and they pierce twice
  
• Merchant (tier 2 mercenary) - gain +1 interest for every 10 gold, Lv.3 effect: your first item reroll is always free
  
• Usurer (tier 3 mercenary, curser, voider) - curses 3 nearby enemies indefinitely with debt, dealing X damage over time, Lv.3 effect: if the same enemy is cursed 3 times it takes 50X damage
  
• Gambler (tier 3 mercenary, sorcerer) - deal 2X damage to a single random enemy where X is how much gold you have, Lv.3 effect: 60/40/20% chance to cast the attack 2/3/4 times
  
• Thief (tier 4 mercenary, rogue) - throws a knife that deals 2X damage and chains 5 times, Lv.3 effect - if the knife crits it deals 10X damage, chains 10 times and grants 1 gold

The shop can now be leveled up. Increasing the shop's XP by 1 costs 5 gold, and different shop levels have different XP requirements before advancing to the next level. There are a total of 5 shop levels and each level has different probabilities for the tiers of units that will spawn when rerolling:

This means that on shop Lv.1, rerolling will produce a tier 1 unit 70% of the time, a tier 2 unit 20% of the time, and a tier 3 unit 10% of the time. Every 2 levels one XP point is automatically granted, so even if you don't level it up manually it'll still level up on its own eventually.

This change is meant to give more focus to builds. Now if you want to rush for a mostly tier 4 build you can, as long as you're willing to spend the gold early (and potentially die due to being too weak) to do so. Similarly, if you want to make sure you get a tier 2 unit to level 3, then you can simply level the shop up to the level with the best odds for tier 2 units and then stay there for as long as possible, for instance.

• Sorcerer items: the items "Awakening", "Chronomancy" and "Divine Punishment" now also work with sorcerers. This is a bandaid fix as sorcerers have no items yet.
  
• Launcher: removed from the game
  
• Jester: number of projectiles released by enemies on death changed to 4 (from 3)
  
• Lv.25 boss: decreased movement speed as it was too fast and sometimes felt unfair
  
• Headbutters: they're now less likely to kill secondary units after bouncing on a first unit, this should decrease the amount of times they snipe multiple units at once

• Free item reroll: the very first item reroll (on level 3) is now always free.
  
• Mouse follow mode: now the snake can be controlled with the mouse, making the game entirely playable with the mouse only.
  
• Hidden cursor: now the cursor is hidden during battle, unless mouse follow mode is enabled.
  
• Gold reward after battle: now gold is rewarded right after battle rather than on the shop. This makes rerolling items easier and more consistent.
  
• End screen restart button: removed the restart button from the game's final screen. Now that players can increase or decreased their new game plus levels at will this button didn't serve any purpose and people were clicking it by mistake.
  
• Visuals for tank attack: the tank's attack now has a visual effect added to it. This should make it more obvious when he has attacked and when he's about to attack too.

• Fixed a crash when too many illusions would be spawned in short succession
  
• Fixed a bug where enemy critters would sometimes be immortal
  
• Fixed a rare crash involving broken enemy critter state

• Arcanist (tier 1 sorcerer) - launches a slow piercing orb that launches other piercing projectiles,
  Lv.3 effect: +50% attack speed for the orb and 2 projectiles are released per cast
  
• Illusionist (tier 3 sorcerer, conjurer) - launches a projectile that deals X damage and creates copies that do the same, Lv.3 effect: doubles the number of copies created and they release 12 projectiles on death that pierce and ricochet once
  
• Witch (tier 2 sorcerer, voider) - creates an area that ricochets around the arena and deals X damage per second, Lv.3 effect: the area periodically releases projectiles that chain once
  
• Silencer (tier 2 sorcerer, curser) - curses 6 nearby enemies for 6 seconds, preventing them from using special attacks, Lv.3 effect: the curse also deals X damage over time
  
• Vulcanist (tier 4 sorcerer, nuker) - creates a volcano that explodes the nearby area 4 times, Lv.3 effect: the number and speed of explosions is doubled
  
• Warden (tier 4 sorcerer, forcer) - creates a force field around a random unit that prevents enemies from entering, Lv.3 effect: creates the force field around 2 units instead
  
• Psychic (tier 2 sorcerer, psyker) - creates a small area that deals X AoE damage, Lv.3 effect: the attack can happen from any distance and repeats twice

• Cursers: changed cursers to only trigger their curse when at least one enemy is nearby.
  
• Exploders: decreased projectile speed, damage and amount released by exploders on death (blue enemy). Many people have complained about these enemies and now, while they're still powerful, they should play a less dominant role in ending your runs.
  
• Headbutters: changed the headbutter (orange enemy) to have his extra headbutt damage dropped whenever he hits a wall or another enemy. This should help prevent units dying from random headbutter bounces. The headbutter's trigger range has also been slightly increased.
  
• Swarmers: increased move speed, damage and amount of critters released (purple enemy).
  
• Shooters: shooters (white enemy) now scale with NG+ difficulty.
  
• Tank: increased tank HP (yellow enemy) and added a special attack.
  
• Damage: slightly decreased damage for all enemies across all difficulties.
  
• Base difficulty: slightly decreased the base game's (NG+0) difficulty.
  
• Boss HP: increased boss HP for levels 18, 24 and 25 (again).

• Camera movement: added an option to turn the camera's movement off.
  
• Direction marker: added an option to enable a marker to be placed in front of the snake. This should make it easier to tell in which direction you're moving at all times.
  
• Tootips: added tooltips for "restart run" and "guide/tutorial" buttons on the shop. This should help prevent unfortunate accidental run restarts.
  
• Cooldown visuals: removed cooldown visuals for units that don't have cooldowns, like the Squire, Chronomancer and Psykeeper.

• Fixed a bug where quitting on level 1 would automatically jump to level 2
  
• Fixed a bug where the shop's lock state would carry over after a run death/win/restart
  
• Fixed a bug where items from a previous restarted run would remain after the 1st round of a new run

• Fixed a visual bug with the cleric: its cooldown was showing as faster than it actually was and thus gave the impression of not healing when it should

Due to the game's overwhelming success (thanks everyone for playing) I've decided to keep updating it for at least the next 2-3 months. These updates will come weekly and will be similar in scope to this one. I'll try to push an update every Friday morning (morning for Americas, afternoon for Europe, night for Asia), although I may be late sometimes.

If you see that there's an update for the game being downloaded on a day other than Friday it generally means I pushed a small bug fix or small improvement to the game. These changes will be listed in Friday's patch notes.

Concurrently with these weekly updates, I'll also be building up to a bigger update that I plan to release at the end of this 2-3 month period (may be a bit longer than that depending on how it goes). This update will be a new game mode that should increase the game's replayability considerably and also help fix some fundamental balance issues that are harder to address in the game's current state.

Finally, as I'm catching up on most bugs that people have reported I'll start having more time to add new things into the game. If you have any ideas for features you'd like, new classes, units, items, enemies, bosses, anything, please create a thread on the forums with your ideas! I may not respond to all threads but I'm reading everything and good ideas from people playing the game are always appreciated!

This update implements many often requested QoL features, mostly buffs underused classes/units, and fixes a few bugs and crashes.

• Auto save: runs are now automatically saved. If you quit the game or it crashes for any reason, when you come back you will be able to continue from where you last left off. This feature was implemented with the help of Davidobot[github.com], so thanks!
  
• Move units: you can now place units in any position in your party. Simply click and drag each unit to any position you want. This should give the game some more strategizing possibilities.
  
• Lock shop: the shop can now be locked. This will save currently presented units, letting you buy them in the next round if you ran out of gold or want to save for more interest.
  
• More options: you can now turn off screen shake and enable unit cooldowns to be shown near the snake rather than on the bottom left. Change these in the options menu from the arena.
  
• NG+ difficulty decrease: you can now decrease your NG+ level if you want to go back to the normal game or an easier NG+ level. Change this in the options menu from the arena.
  
• Restart run from shop: there's now an additional button (R) next to the tutorial one that lets you restart a run from the shop.
  
• View build: you can now view your final build after a win.

• Bard (curser, rogue) has been removed
  
• Jester (curser, rogue) has been added
  
• Launcher: now curses enemies from a distance (previously was from an area centered on the unit)
  
• Bane: changed basic effect to "curses 5 nearby enemies for 6 seconds, they will create small void rifts on death"; changed Lv.3 effect to "100% increased area for bane's void rifts"
  
• Juggernaut: doubled attack area
  
• Saboteur: doubled damage
  
• Engineer: turrets now attack faster; changed Lv.3 effect to "drops 2 additional turrets and grants all turrets +50% damage and attack speed"
  
• Vagrant: attack speed bonus changed to 10% (from 5%)
  
• Cryomancer: doubled DoT tick rate
  
• Unleash: changed area size and damage increase to +1% per second (from 2%)

• Boss health: increased boss health at levels 24 and 25
  
• Base difficulty: slightly increased the game's base difficulty, NG+ difficulty is unchanged

Allowing units to be moved at will makes the game somewhat easier, so a difficulty increase would be necessary to offset it. However, the game already needed a slight difficulty decrease, especially at NG+4/5 levels, so I left that mostly unchanged.

The main changes to difficulty were a slight increase to the base game's, since a number of people were beating it too easily on their very first run. And also an increase to level 24/25 boss healths, since usually they would die very fast and wouldn't get a chance to use their attacks.

• Fixed a class of bugs that would slow down and eventually crash the game when units spawned inside each other or inside player units
  
• Fixed several blue screen crashes
