Who's still here?
Civilization V will never die, it's by far the best Civilization game, its community and its dedicated fans are still going strong, and it has virtually infinite replayability with all of the things you can do with it. But getting back into it recently, I've noticed that the community doesn't quite seem as wide and active as it did between 2012-2019. That's to be expected, as those dates happen to coincide with the release of the final expansion packs for both Civ V and Civ 6 not to mention the rising popularity of new Paradox and Total War titles in the latter half of that timeframe, but it's still got me feeling a little sad. Just feels like there was a magic in those years, a bustling community, tons of content all across the board, and now it feels like it's settled down and many people have moved on, and so has the spotlight. It also
doesn't help that the Civ V fanbase and the Civilization community as a whole has had to endure the Civ 6 flop, the Civ V launcher controversy in 2018, and now Civ 7, and that certainly probably hasn't helped the enthusiasm.

Which brings me to the title of this post. Show of hands, who's still here playing Civilization V?

Monday lunchtime where I am about 18,000 playing now, hard to say for sure but I think that means about 200,000 still active probably not full time. I doubt that many will reply here.:2018thebesteye:

🖖Play every day that I'm at home:Gems:
I like playing civ 5 from time to time. I really hate districts of civ 6. I like having big city with many wonders :)

I tried Civ 6 recently even though I already knew I was ultimately going to stick with Civ V, and that was honestly one of my biggest complaints with the game. Putting all of the yield buildings (market/library/workshop/colosseum) into a district and limiting district construction based on city size means you basically need to focus on only one or two types of yields without the ability to have any of the others. I focused on Gold, Production, and Science and so built their respective districts, but my Culture was almost nothing as a result and I was at the district limit for every City and there was physically nothing I could really do about it. The only saving grace was I went for a Domination victory and the other Civs had built cultural hubs and that's where I got all my Culture from.

On a related note, I like to start games of Civ V in later eras rather than the starting Ancient Era like the average person does, and when you do that, the game scales up your Cities to match the era, giving them extra starting buildings and Population. Because you have to place your districts manually, Civ 6 doesn't do that but still scales up Population, so you get situations where you found your capital and it has 15 citizens and it's immediately in a -30 food deficit and starves to death because there's no food buildings or farms.

Being able to build ships in cities that aren't on coastal tiles is neat though. Overall, interesting idea in concept. Terrible execution.

Still playing but not as often as I did before. Few reasons that makes it true, NONE are because I feel the game is lacking. People play games for all sorts of reasons and they will vary greatly. Changes to your life is IMO the biggest reason. Followed by newer games coming out and people decide to try them. In most cases we come back to this game because it is trusted proven game.

IDK where I found this game, but the moment I saw gameplay for Civ 5 I thought to myself "This is the perfect game." and the rest is history. It's been my favorite for years now. IDK if anyone else can relate to that statement. I wasn't here for any other Civ games before the 5th entry so I missed any hype or expectations for the game. It was just available already and the gameplay resonated with what I thought was awesome: A turn based wargame with a realistic looking setting.

I could only get close to a game like this before while playing the RTS genre of games, but Civilization completely nuked my interest for that genre once I got this game.

I still play V and probably will even when VII comes out. VI was terrible and left a bad taste in my mouth. I'll be waiting until after the DLCs come out and checking a few lets plays before I buy the next iteration.

Buying Civ 6 was a waste of $$ for me. I like to play on the biggest map I can find and spread out my cities. With 6 the influence mechanic is so strong that if you place a city too far out it will revolt and join a diff empire. And yes there are those NPCs that you can place in them that are supposed to keep the people in line but my experience was they don't work and there is only one of them anyway so if you have more than one city out too far you are going to lose them. Also, in Civ 5 I enjoy the aesthetics of the way workers...well work. Like when they build roads and RRs. It has been a while since I had Civ 6 installed and played it so I don't remember exactly but the way workers do that in 6 it is like the road and RR sections just suddenly are there. Anyway, I found the Civ 6 experience to be sterile and boring. With Civ 7 I will wait till it has been out for a while. Look at reviews and watch some game play vids on YT. Then make a thumbs up or down decision.

Still play from time to time, though I mostly play with Workshop Civs and create my own scenarios in my head. Sure, someteims some Workshop civs are stupid unbalanced in terms of being way too strong, but someteims it can be interesting to fight against them as some sort of final boss?

Personally I can't call myself a Civ fan, though. Civ V was my first and probably the only one I'll play. Civ 6 just didn't click with me and 7... well... I dunno. Only 3 eras? Are they still having PTSD of making Poland too strong with 8 free policies (1 for each era)?

Ah, sweet baby jesus, I remember back when I was looking at BNW previews and everyone though tPoland looked weak and boring. Good times, good times.

On Poland: It's even funnier when you start in the Information Era because you get all the free policies all at once at the game start. Means you can essentially start the game with a completed Ideology tree.

On mods and modded Civs: I happen to be a modder myself and share the same opinion, for some reason a game full of the vanilla Civs is just not as interesting as say, turning the game into a World War III scenario or Command & Conquer or Lord of the Rings or Halo or Fallout and so on. What kinds of modded Civs do you play with?

Well, I guess I can say as much as that I mgiht have some uh... cringy mods... but also a little bit of Fire Emblem civs and Advance Wars to get that weird crossover feel to the game.

I just decided to re-install yet again. I played Civ 6 quite a bit, but it never did satisfy.
Civ 5 is really my favourite, despite its flaws.

High hopes for Civ 7, but lowered expectations.

I know this is a historical game and frequented by a lot of history fans, but there's something just so interesting about having a campaign where you're playing as the Earth Defense Force from Red Faction: Guerrilla, and you're also allies with the Republic from Star Wars, the Systems Alliance, the Quarians, and the Turians from Mass Effect, the UNSC and Covenant from Halo, but the Zann Consortium from Star Wars: Empire at War has such a low friendship acceptance stat (I should know, I made them) that they've made no friends all game at all, so you come to their aid when their colonies come under attack by the Imperium from Warhammer 40,000 because you want an alliance with them.

Real game I played. Wish I remembered more about it than just that, though. There was a complex web of political intrigue and alliances and plots that I just simply don't remember in enough detail. For example there was a world war against Garrus and the Turians that I fought alongside the Republic, and we won but left Garrus alive with one city or so. But then after that, some turns later, I found out that the Republic was planning to backstab the entire alliance and invade the continent, so I made an alliance with Garrus and my forces that had invaded his empire a short couple dozen turns prior were now stationed to protect its last bastion.

That's usually how I like to play my games. Set them up to be as political drama as possible.

Sounds like an interesting game for sure. I like to take screenshots and record my gameplay with OBS for Civilization (& other games too) all because I have a horrible memory. I like to look back at my games lately when I'm having an interesting gaming moment like you mentioned. One of the saves I didn't record at the time was me playing as Rome on a large highlands map and I remember thinking how cool & unique the map looked. Never did finish that game either lol

If I had the hard drive space I'd definitely do that. Or at least, take a screenshot once per turn so I can see the map of the world as the game progresses.
