save scumming is your only real option here I'm afraid...

You want a specific greater hero? If so just duplicate the hero a few times and that gives you a better chance, you can also make them recruitable or even make a spell to recruit them probably. You'd just add recruiting them to a building you wouldn't let the ai to build, look at modding manual for that.
